I apologize but this review may come from a place of disappointment but, let me break it down for you. Please note, I understand my responsibility for the situation and have learned a valuable lesson here. I got a speeding ticket as well as a careless driving ticket. I requested a plea offer through the NJ portal from the prosecutor. This plea offer was not much better than the original alleged offense. My husband I decided to seek counsel. I contacted this law office since they practice in the court where my case was assigned. When I first called, the gentleman I spoke with seemed knowledgeable and eager to help. I had no idea that he was not the attorney as he did not mention this to me. We thought the fee was fair and I called back and spoke with a female who was kind of unwelcoming at first. See, when they answer the phone it's "Law Office" not "Ciffrodello Law Office, XXX speaking. How can I help you?" or anything to identify with whom you are speaking. After a few moments of conversation and probably sensing the frustration in my voice, the female who then identified herself as the office manager, changed her manner and did assist me with retaining the services. She did also mention that the fee I was quoted was quite low and the first gentleman I spoke with was only a paralegal and should not have offered this fee. In any case, she honored the fee and sent over the paperwork for me to sign. I received and signed the paperwork and paid the fee. I thought I was set. I heard nothing else back from anyone in the office. I then got a notice of my court date and called the office to let them know the date and time and heard nothing else until I called on the Friday before my Monday court appearance to confirm that I was indeed on the calendar. It wasn't until I was transferred 2 times that I actually spoke with an attorney. He spoke very quickly and informed me that they had not received the discovery in my case. When I mentioned that it was about a month prior to this that I retained the services, he said 'It's a state police case' like an 'it is what it is' scenario. He did mention that I could get a postponement but I had already arranged for the day off from work and wanted to get this all situated. Though I questioned him about the process, it still wasn't exactly clear what would happen. My biggest problem is that, I got no phone call or any type of communication from the attorney representing me prior to my court date and, if I hadn't called on the Friday beforehand, who knows when I would have even known his name? The result of the case was not what I had hoped for but it was better than what I would have gotten on my own and this I am grateful for. Do I feel like it could have been better? Sure. Don't we all? However, recognizing my actions that put me here, I guess it was a reasonable outcome compared to the alleged original offense. I only wish that there was better communication from the attorney handling my case and that I didn't have to wait until I called the office on the business day before my case to even speak with him.

Melissa was amazing! I wouldn’t recommend getting divorced to anyone, but if you do Melissa is who you want in your corner. She worked tirelessly even on her weekends and any odd time that I reached out to her. She made this very difficult time as easy for me as possible.

Her knowledge of this area of the law is impeccable! She not only treats you with respect, she treats with you with compassion because she knows how highly emotional these types of issues are as was such with our case. Whenever we had a question she was available immediately to answer it for us as well as to ease our anxiety over the issues she was addressing for us. She was able to get us everything we asked for in court and we are extremely grateful to her!! I personally recommend her to everyone I know in need of a family law attorney. Todd Palumbo will be there with you all the way! I felt less anxious knowing that he was there on my side. He comes out with enough proof and evidence to show the plaintiff was making false statements and breaking the law. You need a good lawyer to defend you in the court of law Mr. Palumbo is your attorney.

  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Cranford, New Jersey?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
