I have worked with Mr. Ritte on three separate occasions. I have always found him to be all of the things listed above and more. He is extremely easy to talk to, and does not overload you with a lot of legal jargon. He has always been responsive to my calls, if not able to take my call, he gets back to me in a very reasonable and timely fashion. He has been extremely organized, making our recent closing as smooth and easy as I could ask for. Even though he has a pleasant manner about him, he stands his ground when the opposing attorney gets too assertive. His billing is clear and concise, and I feel his fee schedule has been very fair. I felt that I was charged very fairly, and not nickeled and dimed for every email or phone call. Something I find appalling by other attorneys I have worked with. I would highly recommend his services if you are looking for a very knowledgable, thorough attorney who has an easy manner about him.

Several years ago when my wife and I were looking to purchase a small business we turned to Jason to help guide us through the process. Jason was there for us every step of the way. Not only was he very knowledgeable and responsive but he also provided sound advice and we came to rely on him as a trusted advisor. Since that time we have also worked with Jason on both commercial and residential real estate transactions and have been extremely satisfied every time.

Jason Rittie is the kind of attorney most people wish for...responsive, reliable and willing to go the extra mile to uncover the positive opportunity in the case. Jason handled our real estate transaction and in addition to making the process smooth and easy for us, he researched the property extensively uncovering the additional parcel of land that was missing from the survey. We appreciated his diligence and knowledge in handling the complexities of this for us.

I hired Dorothy to help me get consent from my ex-husband to move out of state with my son who is a minor. Dorothy did a great job negotiating with his lawyer and making points on my behalf in order to get the content agreed to. The outcome couldn't have went any better. Thank you Dorothy!

I had been trying since the middle of the pandemic to get my very high alimony lowered since my income had been cut in half. I used a cheaper lawyer and the situation only got worse. Dorothy and her team took this mess and got me the relief I needed. Dorothy is a tough negotiator. I’m definitely glad she was on my side.

After being stuck in a six year child custody battle my former attorney had to retire and my case was referred to Dorothy. I am very glad it was! Dorothy very quickly understood the ordeal I had been through and how to resolve them. She really fought for me and my family and helped me obtain all of the goals I was hoping for and more. I never expected to win as strong as I did and I never would have been able to do so without Dorothy. Thank you so much Dorothy and for using "the power of No" so effectively!

I am a client of R&A and we just wrapped up a post-divorce case where the adversary got stomped. Everything the opposing party asked for got denied outright AND I was awarded attorney's fees. Amy K., and her team, gave her the business in a convoluted jurisdiction case wrought with lies by compiling and filing THOROUGH documents and information necessary to prove our case. It's not enough to believe you are right, you have to prove it with evidence within the confines of the lens the court is looking through. R&A did exactly that. I wholeheartedly recommend R&A for family law matters.

Catherine is professional at all times, meticulous in her preparation for court and when necessary, aggressive with her opponents. She is the best at what she does and as a person she is someone who cares about people and looks for justice for her clients. She has a passion for righting wrongs. I knew she was only a phone call or email away should I have any questions and she always promptly returned my calls. I was very fortunate to retain Catherine as an attorney and highly recommend her to anyone who may find themselves in need of her services.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Denville, New Jersey?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
