I wanted to take a moment to express how beyond pleased I am with Attorney Ira Cohen and his practice. I am not sure if you are familiar with how many hours actually go into closing a house, and how many particulars are involved. He and his Assistant Susan made this closing like champions. They went above and beyond and payed attention to my concerns, calmed my worries, and eased my stress level. This process can feel like an eternity, yet it was closed in an expedition manor. Susan is an amazing support and was always there to answer any questions that I had. I highly recommend using Attorney Ira Cohen his services will get you the results you are looking for !

If you are looking for an attorney that possess strength, knowledge, perseverance and personal commitment, then you need Mr. Musmanno and his staff! I have had the privilege of being Mr. Musmanno's client on several occasions. In retrospect, he's been the only attorney I've ever consulted with since my early 20's. He is who, I consider my attorney. He has been the attorney, that has always made me feel comfortable, even when faced with a very difficult, emotional situation. Words cannot express the type of professionalism that Mr. Musmanno and his staff have given us in our time of need. Not only does he deeply care about his cases, he cared about me as a person. I'll also have you know that Mr. Musmanno commuted a great distance from his main office to do my closing on my house. My husband and I will be forever grateful for him going out and beyond for us. I would never hesitate to recommend Mr. Musmanno and his team, for anybody looking for a high quality legal firm that also has a very personal touch in the making. Thanks again for all your hard work...

Have you ever been hurt? The kind of hurt where you can't walk or care for your family properly?... Well I have. And let me tell you it is scary. And it's even more scary when the reason you were hurt is because someone was negligent. What do you do? Knowing life would never be the same... lingering pain, physical limitations... and what's worse is that it could happen to someone else at any moment. That's how I felt. I walked in to Mr. Musmanno's office not knowing what to expect. I had never met with an attorney for anything and I was scared. By the end of that first meeting I knew everything would be ok. Chris (as he told me to call him instead of Mr. Musmanno) explained everything in plain language. He walked me through all the steps of the legal process. And he succeeded in giving my family something we never had... enough money to start over, physical limitations and all. Nothing will change my scars. But I don't look at them the same anymore. And I have Chris to thank for that.

Mr. Musmanno took the time with me to go over all the points of my case. Any questions or concerns that I had were always answered in a timely manner. I felt confident in my choice of Mr. Musmanno as my attorney. I only have good things to say about Mr. Musmanno and his staff.

I am a client of R&A and we just wrapped up a post-divorce case where the adversary got stomped. Everything the opposing party asked for got denied outright AND I was awarded attorney's fees. Amy K., and her team, gave her the business in a convoluted jurisdiction case wrought with lies by compiling and filing THOROUGH documents and information necessary to prove our case. It's not enough to believe you are right, you have to prove it with evidence within the confines of the lens the court is looking through. R&A did exactly that. I wholeheartedly recommend R&A for family law matters.

I hired Dorothy to help me get consent from my ex-husband to move out of state with my son who is a minor. Dorothy did a great job negotiating with his lawyer and making points on my behalf in order to get the content agreed to. The outcome couldn't have went any better. Thank you Dorothy!

I had been trying since the middle of the pandemic to get my very high alimony lowered since my income had been cut in half. I used a cheaper lawyer and the situation only got worse. Dorothy and her team took this mess and got me the relief I needed. Dorothy is a tough negotiator. I’m definitely glad she was on my side.

After being stuck in a six year child custody battle my former attorney had to retire and my case was referred to Dorothy. I am very glad it was! Dorothy very quickly understood the ordeal I had been through and how to resolve them. She really fought for me and my family and helped me obtain all of the goals I was hoping for and more. I never expected to win as strong as I did and I never would have been able to do so without Dorothy. Thank you so much Dorothy and for using "the power of No" so effectively!

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Denville, New Jersey?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
