Evan, Heather, Tori and the team are the best at what they do. From start to finish, they were great to work with, highly knowledgeable and made the whole experience so much less stressful. The closing was quick and organized. Cannot recommend them enough!

When my husband and I started looking for a home, I asked around to find a lawyer to represent us. I reached out to Evan since my brother-in-law and his wife hired his firm when they purchased their home. Right off the bat, I was impressed with Evan because he was incredibly thorough in answering all of my questions. We hired them to represent us and they did not disappoint. Evan and his team (including his paralegals and Heather Aronson) were always friendly, professional, knowledgeable and prompt when it came to responding to our questions and concerns. We were very happy with their service and definitely recommend them.

Gregg is a staunch advocate for the real potential casualties of divorce; the children. When you have a challenging spouse who wants to rupture the thread of the nuclear family, Gregg will fight tirelessly to protect your interests and theirs. I now have sole custody of my children due to the strength and competence of Mr. Rubenstein and Samantha Latif. I will recommend these attorneys without hesitation. Don’t hire beagles when you need mastiffs. Sincerely, Melissa Bentley M.A. retired teacher

I waited for months on writing this review in order to find the words that would do this office justice. I will start by saying that your office exceeded my already high expectations, performance-wise and outcome-wise. You have delivered exceptional results, and I am still amazed with them every day. After interviewing 9 attorneys over 12 months, I went to see Gregg who straightforwardly explained the process and stressed on the fact that my children’s best interest is of more importance to him than all other parties involved. He earned my trust from the beginning. Throughout the process that lasted 11 months, Gregg and Samantha have been attentive to every detail, focused and proactive in every move and extremely diligent. Gregg tried to minimize my expenses in every way possible, worried about my budget more than I myself did, a behavior I have not encountered with any other law firm. Throughout the conflict, Gregg tried to absorb the ups and downs so I can maintain my calm. He used admirable wisdom when making quick decisions, while keeping the balance on when and how to act quickly and when to hold back and use reason. Repeatedly have I been told by legal representatives including court panelists, mediators and other attorneys that I was in great hands. I have not dealt with a more ethical and conscientious firm that maintained this exceptional level of morality and human decency at a very emotional and challenging time in my life. I couldn’t be more grateful. If you are in need of a family law attorney, go to Gregg with your eyes closed.

Gregg was representing me in a divorce case that involved a very difficult husband, many obstacles along the way, three children, sale of the home, and court closed due to pandemic. From the first meeting he truly showed care and interest, not just for me but for everyone involved. The empathy that was present throughout the process made this whole experience less gruesome. Gregg was also on point with his legal advice, always reachable and very straightforward. He will let you know if he thinks you are taking an unreasonable position and that truly saves time in this process. You want to have an attorney that will not waste your time and money feeding into your emotionally charged requests. You want an attorney that knows what he is doing, can avoid the pitfalls of the system, can be trusted and represent you fiercely. Being in a divorce, no matter what reason, puts you in a very vulnerable position. Thankfully Gregg was there for me and if you are finding yourself in the same position there is no doubt in my mind that Gregg is the best choice.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of East Brunswick, New Jersey?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
