We sold our previous home recently and Alison represented the buyer. There’s a radon issue which couldn’t be resolved on time and therefore we paid a deposit to Alison’s account to have the transaction closed first. Alison’s paralegal was the worst at updating us in the progress (when Alison told us that someone would update us tomorrow, it never happened). Maybe it’s because Alison didn’t represent me. But communication with people on a case is a very important aspect of the job. That’s not how I would treat someone I work with (either with a shared interest or not). Update: this paralegal called Donna said she only deal with my attorney, which is a funny way to evade from the fact that she's lazy and unprofessional. My attorney is a extremely good communicator, she passed along information whenever she got it. So basically the way Donna worked with my attorney is doing nothing - no update, nothing. And she sent out check in a plain envelope without any tracking, thinking her job's done when she shipped the check away. This person should be fired.

Alison and her team is AWESOME! If you are looking for a real estate transaction and an Attorney who would guide you right throughout the process, it’s Alison! She takes time with the client and advises after keeping best interest of client as a priority. We went over couple of transactions with her team and even though first one was cancelled, her approach and priorities working with client did not change. We reached out to her multiple times with our questions and she was prompt in all her communications. She is thorough in all validations and checks required to be done on transactions and we felt at ease throughout the process with her leading discussions with lender, seller attorney and real estate agents. She would be out attorney in future for any transactions and I would highly recommend her for any real estate needs to everyone!

There is no reason to choose anyone but Alison to handle your realty affairs. We just closed on our Edison home with no delays and no miscommunications between the parties involved. This was our third closing using Alison for both buying and selling our homes. She consistently handles all matters and every challenge calmly, expeditiously, and professionally. Alison listened to our concerns and kept us informed throughout the process. Thank you, Alison. You are the best!

Jon Marshall and his team helped me dodge the biggest bullet of my life. I am eternally grateful for the services of Mr. Bonus as well as Joanna and the team. Mr Bonus is very intelligent and very well-known in middlesex county, you’d be foolish not to retain Jon Marshall & his team for your legal representation. Sincerely can’t thank you guys enough.

After being served with a temporary restraining order (TRO), I enlisted Paul Koutouzatkis and was thrilled with how the case concluded. His knowledge, experience, meticulousness, and grasp of the law transformed a potentially tough situation into a highly manageable one. As someone who rarely deals with legal matters, facing uncertainty in such a serious situation was daunting. However, Paul’s expertise offered me peace of mind and a successful resolution. I wholeheartedly recommend Paul to anyone in need of exceptional legal representation. Thank you for getting my TRO dismissed.

Everything was done through email back and forth. He was always quick to respond to emails or give me a quick call if need be. Very thorough and fast. I had an excellent experience and would hire again and recommend. My patent went through after the first office action and I was pleased to say my patent was issued within 6 months of applying. I had everything laid out and did my homework on patents before hiring and it made the process smooth and quick.

Walter made a seemingly difficult patent process very streamlined and stress free. He is knowledgeable and gave us very good advice and counsel. He was super responsive to any inquiry and was able to complete and file our design and utility patent application for us. We have successfully received the design patent and awaiting the utility patent. Highly recommend Walter!

Brett helped me on a review of my global entry acceptance. He knew exactly what to look for and how to resolve the issue. Brett was able to look for, request and receive key documentation needed. That type of information is not readily available and only somebody that is knowledgeable with the system would be able to get. Very thankful for his quick and accurate work. I would work with him again on a heartbeat.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Edison, New Jersey?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
