I’ve recommended 2 people to Tanya who were very distressed over their circumstances. She solved their problems and gave them peace of mind.

My experience with Helfand & Associates was very good and I can strongly recommend this firm to any person needing assistance with bankruptcy. I felt very nervous, and ashamed, to find myself needing these services. However, Ms. Helfand was reassuring and professional, and my case was handled smoothly. The fee that I was quoted up front was the total amount I paid. Ms. Helfand's associate who attended court with me was also a very personable and competent attorney who made me feel as comfortable as I could be in those circumstances. The support staff at Helfand are very helpful and followed up with me consistently throughout the process, keeping me on track.

In 2013 I found myself in a very difficult situation I was going to be faced with the fact that after 26 years of marriage I was going to file for a divorce and I knew it was not going to be easy, So I began searching for an attorney I had met with two other attorneys before meeting with Mr. Pell. During our first meeting I felt so confident that he was the right attorney for me the process began. With his relentless motivation and his knowledge of the law Mr. Pell demonstrated tremendous expertise compelling arguments that were extremely valuable to my case and proved dissipation of material assets and was able to get me a wonderful out come on my settlement. Elliott Pell is an intelligent, capable, dedicated, and personable person. He is always quick on his feet, with sensible reactions in all the circumstances I've seen him in. I feel confident in saying that he is capable of handling any situation with thoughtfulness and maturity. Sincerely, K

What to say about Tanya Helfand, Esq.?? Well, to start, by nature I am an exceedingly critical and pessimistic person who is able to filter out BS or anyone attempting to play me. So…with that being said, in Tanya you won’t get anything but Grade A++ service, no nonsense and, most importantly, a NO BS attorney who also cuts through any BS from the opposition. She represented me in a divorce action with the opposition being a large firm whose operating standard seemed be “we guarantee incompetence along with procrastination”. Yet, Tanya was always driving and pushing on my behalf. She is small in stature but don’t be fooled - with her you are getting a pit bull terrier in lawyer form. While I may sound like a public relations rep hired by her, I’m absolutely NOT - I’m just a fully satisfied customer who appreciated her top shelf service, her dedication to her profession and my needs. Can she be brusque?? Yep…but only necessarily so in order to cut through the crap and keep you on track while keeping your fees down rather than let you blather on and run costs up with extraneous questions or emails. Look, if you want someone who will tell you what you want to hear, make empty promises and blow smoke up your butt - look elsewhere. But if you want an attorney who will fight tooth & nail for you, always looking out for your best interests while also telling you like it is, Tanya Helfand is the best choice in an attorney…. anywhere.

Ms. Helfand, Tanya is an A plus lawyer that will do whatever it takes to get the best result possible for you. What makes her an A plus lawyer? She knows the law, is broad minded, knows people, is intuitive and cares greatly. She will work on Sundays, Memorial Day Weekend, whatever it takes. She is very flexible as things change within your case. She will continuously pivot and adjust strategies during your case as things change. She cares deeply about your kids and will look out for their best interest as best as she can. She is not afraid to guide you in ways that she thinks are in your best interest. She is a lawyer for honest people that will want what’s best for themselves and their kids. She is frank, to the point and upfront. I can’t stress enough that if you are a good person, that is honest and caring, then Tanya is for you. She is honest and really cares. Her intuition will lead you on the proper path for your case. You need someone like her to get you through this hard process. She understands business and finance so she can guide you through complex situations. She works well with forensic accountants and focuses on the big picture while many attorneys and accountants do not. She works with you to figure out the parameters of where your case will fall out and then she does what she can to get you the best result possible. Her staff is extremely competent and friendly and makes the process as easy as possible. You do not realize how much work goes into a divorce including the work the client has to do. Make sure you have the right people backing you up.

Brigette Eagan may be described as a hidden gem. She may not be as well known yet, but once she represents you in a case, you quickly realize how fortunate you are to have her on your team. Brigette represented my company in several employment discrimination matters. We faced significant liability if the plaintiffs were successful in establishing their cases. She showed excellent leadership and judgment by developing a defensive strategy and guiding her team of lawyers and paralegals throughout the course of the litigation. Ultimately we were successful thanks in large part to her persistent dedication. Brigette is always professional and treats everyone, clients, co-workers and adversaries, with dignity and respect. She is extremely responsive, returning phone calls and emails in a timely manner. I came to trust her advice and relied on her extensively. A few things really impressed me about her. First, she has a profound understanding of employment law. Although she has only been practicing for about 10 years, to listen to her talk you would think she has been doing this for decades. Second, she cares deeply for her clients. Client service is a top priority for her as evidenced by all of the tireless work she put into our cases. Third, the quality of her work is unparalled. Whether it be writing a brief, arguing a motion before a judge or taking a deposition, she is very, very competent. Brigette does not get enough credit. I hope her firm realizes what a valuable attorney they have and I look forward to continuing to work with her..

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Florham Park, New Jersey?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
