Claire and Felicia were amazing to work with! Claire really took the time to help me reach a reasonable settlement and avoid a contested divorce. Both Claire and Felicia were supportive and helped me navigate a divorce that could have become very complicated. I can't recommend them enough. Claire truly cares about her clients and I think she is the best divorce lawyer in Monmouth County if not NJ as she’s has the knowledge and expertise to get you the best possible outcome.

If you are in the unfortunate situation of a divorce and are worried about your future with your children, assets and mental well being Claire Scully is the attorney for you. From start to finish Claire has guided me every step of the way. My first priority was my two daughters and getting my equal share with them. Going through all the horrible aspects of a divorce parenting time, forensic audits of a business, splitting up assets and a restraining order against my now X wife. Claire wins time and time again. With a fantastic paralegal Felicia is always there for any question you may have. Always an ear to listen and help guide you through some of the worst days. Their knowledge and team work is truly a work of art. A divorce is an absolute horrible life event but having a team like Claire and Felicia in your corner truly matters. I never felt like any old client to Claire, she makes you feel like a top priority and truly cares about you. From the 9am Monday phone call to the just checking on you call on a Sunday afternoon Claire truly cares about her clients. While your family may be falling apart you gain a family with Claire and Felicia at Scully Family law.

I hired Claire Scully in summer 2019 when I filed for divorce. Claire and her Legal Assistant Felicia were available to talk whenever I needed more understanding about the Court system and what to expect in my case. Claire worked diligently to get me the desired relief. She is professional, thorough and empathetic. Now, several years later, I reached out to Claire again because I needed to modify my MSA due to a change in circumstances. Claire guided me and fought for the proper protection for my daughter. I am relieved I received what I asked for. If you are looking for the family lawyer who is professional, earnest and gets things done, I highly recommend her! She will fight for you to get the desired outcome you are looking for. Claire is truly an excellent family lawyer! I will definitely use her again in the future if needed.

I'd give Claire a 6th star. Claire is a master at her craft. When we go to a lawyer, we want to feel assured that we're choosing someone who understands not only how to protect our rights but also understands how we're feeling about the situation. Being involved with the legal system for many is scary. I was hesitant to take a consultation with her at first because I was already speaking to multiple attorneys. It was an extremely stressful time because I was a defendant in a TRO case which was time sensitive. I was being accused of things that were untrue during the aftermath of a complicated relationship that's demise mimicked a divorce. Once I spoke to her on the phone, I knew I would be taken care of. Claire is highly intelligent, she understood better than any other the reality of the situation. She was uniquely perceptive when listening to what I had to say and subsequently was able to immediately figure out how to help me. She came to trial ammo loaded, confident as the sun is bright, and executed perfectly from start to finish. Thank you so much, Claire.

I was married to the kind of person who lied about who they were and committed countless financial crimes as well as various forms of abuse throughout the duration of our marriage inclusive of building a false reality via forged documents and made up scenarios, people and danger. When I forced this person to exit my life, I had no idea how I intended to survive. She had drained all of our financial accounts and my mental health had suffered so significantly I was rendered (temporarily) disabled. My situation was messy. Claire was undaunted- she agreed to represent me to separate myself from the scariest, most deceitful person I have ever met. I am confident I would be deceased today had Claire and Felicia not helped me through this process. Claire, respecting my boundaries at every turn, calmed my anxieties and made herself readily available. She listened to me and pivoted as necessary- there were certainly some unexpected curves along the way that she had to recalibrate in order to navigate (my ex is the stuff of lifetime movies). She changed course with grace time after time, never tiring and never blaming me for things far beyond my control. She called me the Sunday before my scheduled divorce after I had called it off via e-mail. The fear I felt was too immense and I intended to discontinue my life. I had blocked her office number and was attempting to rehome my dogs. Who calls on a new number I’ve never seen before but Claire Scully? I don’t think she even realizes the timing of her call or how it affected the timeline of my life. She used her lawyer voice at first, clearly displeased by my recent abandonment of our plan, but quickly realized I was just terrified. She immediately changed course again and added language into the divorce paperwork to protect me from my very legitimate fears. She and the judge assigned to my case then spent an hour and a half in court painstakingly crafting language to protect me from further abuse, conning related behavior, etc. She also carefully preserved my right to press charges should I ever find myself capable and willing. She and the courts provided me a divorce decree that made it clear that my spouse was a person of interest should anything happen to me or my home thus granting me the peace of mind to finally sleep soundly at night and begin to feel a sense of safety and wellbeing. I believe that Claire and Felicia’s expertise, empathy, wisdom and dedication to their work enabled them to meet me in (hopefully) my darkest hour with the compassion necessary to help me proceed with a dignified life. During parts of this process, Claire and Felicia probably cared more about me than I was able to care about myself. If you are in need of legal services, I hope you find Claire and I hope you choose her- she will absolutely identify and defend your very best interests with every fiber of her being. I could not recommend her or Felicia any more highly. They get it done when it seems impossible. The humor she brought to the situation was therapeutic and the insight she offered was invaluable. I’m glad I met her- lame circumstances, but overall 11/10. Claire and Felicia are about as good as human beings come.

Alan is excellent. From my first consult with him in a franchisee suit, I knew I was in good hands. He had a thorough and deep understanding of the law, and he had excellent insight into my particular case. He was able to help me understand my options and, as such, I was able to avoid litigation. It was a huge win for me and my company. His attention to detail was second to none.

I cannot recommend this law firm highly enough. After many months of stalled negotiations over a highly contested site access agreement, Michael and his team were the ones who finally got us over the finish line. They represented us both in and out of court, ultimately securing an agreement that not only protected our property but also ensured the health and safety of my family. Michael's expertise was evident as he navigated the complexities of the law, the court system, and various state departments. But what truly set him apart was his empathy. He took the time to listen to our concerns, understood the stakes, and fought tirelessly for our rights. This was more than just a legal victory; it was a personal one. We felt heard, supported, and ultimately, safe. If you're looking for a law firm that combines legal prowess with genuine care for their clients, then this is the one. Thank you, Michael, for everything!

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Freehold, New Jersey?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
