I had a domestic violence case in which I was the plaintiff and the only one with a attorney. My case took a little over a year to resolve. My experience with Mr. Banks is a nice guy but there are many things I experienced throughout my case that just shouldn’t of happened. I was on the stand for testimony for about 10 months for a few text messages that were not domestic violence related. Mr. Banks let the judge be the Defendant’s paralegal and help her throughout the case. When it’s time for us to put the defendant on the stand in which we had numerous strong evidence against her breaking the law, he asks me to voluntarily dismiss the case. My parenting time got taken away just from an false accusation from the defendant in which I told Mr. Banks the judge and the defendant were wrong and tried to explain it to him in court at the present time and Mr. Banks didn’t listen to me until after i we left the court room then he realized I was right. Even though I did get back my parenting time I lost and the judge apologized, it should of never happened. I typed up about a 40 page timeline of the domestic violence history and videos for Mr. Banks. There are times he came to the court unprepared without the correct paperwork and the videos, luckily I always carried my own copies to court. You could tell he didn’t look over the paperwork to be prepared, I had to walk him through the timeline in court for cross examination because he free styled the questions for the defendant. I could go into more things that happened over the course of my experience with Mr. Banks but to sum it all up I think he could of did a much better job on my case.

This testimonial is for Mr. James Harrison Banks Law Offices (Employment Lawyer) located in Hackensack, New Jersey whom I used for my New Jersey State Unemployment needs. I had a unique situation living in the State of Florida with my unemployment legal needs coming from the State of New Jersey. I was fortunate enough to find and hire Mr. Banks who I found extremely knowledgeable and well-versed in this specialized area for my personal needs. The process unfortunately took approximately 3 years to get a verdict with appeals and all. But Mr. Banks put forth arguments and evidence to prove my case and with the time and effort he made during that whole time, the State of New Jersey ruled in my favor and dismissed my case. I highly recommend Mr. James Banks as your lawyer in need of an Employment Lawyer. I have no doubt you will be completely satisfied and will not be disappointed by hiring him.

I was involved in a situation were my employer retaliated against me and co-workers because of our political affiliation. We bought our case to Sheila and right from the beginning she discussed case law and our chances of winning the case. We made the right choice and hired Sheila and our case was settled because of her relentless pursuit for justice in our case.

Sheila was very attentive, informative and showed great interest in my case. She returned my calls promptly and answered my many questions without frustration. I was confident that she had a wealth of knowledge on the whistleblowing laws and she was able to explain them to me in terms that I could understand, without me having a law degree. She is a strong lawyer, who kept on top of my case without leaving me out of the decision making process. I trust her.

Sue Smith, listened, acted, and we got a response, shortly after they received her letter. Unfortunately, i needed a lawyer in my state to represent me. But, Suzanne's quick action, triggering a response and offer, from the opposing party, has set me in a very good position with my new lawyer, and we are going to trial. I'm only sorry i couldn't stay with Suzanne, to finish out my case. I highly recommend Suzanne, and would gladly use her again, if needed, with anything that does not require me to use a lawyer from my state only.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Hackensack, New Jersey?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
