I would never recommend either Francesca or Carlye, as my experience with them was that of ineffectiveness, procrastination and extreme inefficiency resulting in high bills and no accomplishments on my behalf, accompanied by poor attitude. I contacted Francesca in late Sep 2023 to help me and my son gain control of my son’s college fund and get my ex to pay child support. Francesca was optimistic, stated that they will get to work on it “right away”, and suggested that she bring on Carlye as it would be “more efficient”. What I was not told is that I will be billed thousands of dollars for Francesca and Carlye talking to each other (conferences they called it, and that is very lucrative for the two of them, but definitely not efficient). I was also not told that it meant that Francesca will dump my case on an inexperienced junior attorney –something I would have never agreed to. Not knowing any better I took her advice. By the end of November, still with no court date or even a motion in sight, my ex hired a lawyer, who, according to Francesca, was going to give us a counter-offer. Francesca suggested we wait to see it, before going to court. I waited for somebody to reach out to me until mid-January, for nearly 2 months, when my ex sent my son’s tuition payment to himself instead of to college. When I texted her, Francesca finally called my ex’s lawyer and discovered that he fired her. I am not sure when Francesca or Carlye were planning to follow-up on the situation if I didn’t text them. At that point, Francesca reassured me that we will be doing to court “very soon” (previously suggesting that in such a situation we can have an emergency court hearing within days). However, neither she nor Carlye pursued an emergency hearing, and did nothing to remediate the situation, leaving myself and my son to fight my ex for the tuition money, but I was billed thousands of dollars for communicating with them about the situation. It took until March to get a motion produced, with the court date eventually scheduled for mid-April. At that point my ex lawyered up again, asking to postpone the court date so they can file counter-motion. While it only took his lawyer a total of only 11 days from when he was hired until he completed the motion and submitted it to court, my lawyers missed court communications, and with all the other delays on part of Francesca and Carlye we did not get to court until early June, more than 8 months from when I hired them, and at the cost of 4-5 times what my ex paid his lawyer to get to that point. Once we got to court, Carlye proved to be just as ineffective and inefficient in convincing the judge of anything of benefit to me. The summer was spent by her in an unbroken streak of failures to get any results on my behalf or to move the process toward resolution through multiple court appearances, while billing me thousands of dollars. I was left to fight with my ex by myself outside of court to try to get to any kind of an agreement about the college fund and child support, while continuing to pay legal fees for "representation" but no results. My ex and I finally came to an agreement, outside of court, with no input from my lawyers. The agreement was written up by my ex’s attorney, who was much more responsive and efficient through that process. I really should have fired Francesca and Carlye at that point and finalized it myself, but I thought that I may as well benefit from having access to legal representation. Another mistake. They dragged it out for another 2 months, with the final agreement being identical to the original + changes by my ex that he sent over the day after his lawyer circulated the agreement, but I was charged additional ~ 4500 for their “work”. They did nothing but dragged the process out for over a year, left me to fight with my ex by myself and “efficiently” billed me tens of thousands of dollars. When I brought my concerns to Francesca, she accused me of trying to shake her down and get out of paying my bills. So – definitely don’t recommend.

I am so thankful for Thomas and his help with my divorce. I recommend him at every opportunity. His knowledge and approach kept my divorce civil and moving. When things escalated he was there for me, looking out for my best interest, while helping me set reasonable expectations. He doesnt get sucksd into the drama and isn't going to milk unfortunate situations to bump his bottom line.

The O’Cathian Law Group was introduced to me by a close friend who himself had gone through a very difficult transition in his life. Best advice I got. From my very first meeting with Francesca and Thomas, it was very clear to me that I had made the right choice. Thomas rolled up his sleeves and worked his tail off for me. He is very knowledgeable, competent, caring, compassionate, thoughtful and always treats me with respect. Thomas guided me through the most difficult 14 month period of my life. Though I never wanted to walk into their office I am very happy with my result and will be forever grateful that I did. I highly recommend them.

I was involved in a situation were my employer retaliated against me and co-workers because of our political affiliation. We bought our case to Sheila and right from the beginning she discussed case law and our chances of winning the case. We made the right choice and hired Sheila and our case was settled because of her relentless pursuit for justice in our case.

Sheila was very attentive, informative and showed great interest in my case. She returned my calls promptly and answered my many questions without frustration. I was confident that she had a wealth of knowledge on the whistleblowing laws and she was able to explain them to me in terms that I could understand, without me having a law degree. She is a strong lawyer, who kept on top of my case without leaving me out of the decision making process. I trust her.

Over the course of my professional life, I've become aware that I am a pretty difficult person to work for, so I was pleasantly surprised to have Jacob Awad representing me. Beyond the essentials like answering or immediately returning countless phone calls, offering excellent legal advice and being impressively punctual, Mr. Awad proved to us that he took his client relations very seriously. During the course of my experience with Mr. Awad, I learned that he didn't actually operate in accordance with normal business hours or holidays--He was always working, even when others were not. There were multiple parties involved in our deal, and whenever a seemingly-crippling problem arose, Jacob was the one who everyone turned to, who put in the extra time and who magically managed pull enough strings to right the ship. He offered advice, insight, experience, an excellent professional network, and honesty at every turn. During the months we worked together, it was clear he put his clients above all else. My experience with Jake has been so positive, that I have already gone on to recommend him to close friends. Personally, I won't hesitate to use him again the next time I need representation. The real test to judging a professional is: "Would you recommend this person to your mother?" In the case of Jacob Awad, that answer is an emphatic "Yes!"

The quality service I received from Jacob Awad was remarkable. From the initial meeting he was responsive to my calls, questions and concerns. All issues were handled professionally and timely. A lawyer who cares about the client more than he cares about the money. His priority is helping the client by eliminating the stress that many real estate deals can cause. I highly recommend him as a lawyer and also as a person with strong morals. If you're looking for a lawyer that treats his clients with the up most respect and care then I highly recommend Jacob Awad.

If you are from New Jersey you know he is considered the best defense attorney in the state. If you are researching and just learning about Mr. Flood, chances are you have seen him on television or in the newspapers unknowingly. My case involved a securities transactions. Mr. Flood and his team worked countless hours and the end result was “not guilty”. I think the federal prosecutors nearly fainted. It was a long and difficult trial. Me. Flood saved my company and my life. He is not only an excellent lawyer, but a great man. Finally, when he walks into a room people take notice. He is impeccably dressed with Cary Grant looks. A triple threat my wife would say. Thank you Mr. Flood.

He represented my company. I am in the public eye and he managed to not only be discreet and one of the finest men I have had the pleasure of meeting and working with - the end result was very favourable. He ran circles around a very unreasonable international CEO and his lawyers. Excellent and very humble man!

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Hackensack, New Jersey?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
