Going into my domestic violence/divorce case, I knew it was going to be difficult. I had tried to leave before, but would feel scared and powerless trying to navigate the complicated family court system with previous attorneys. All I can say is that I am eternally grateful that Rawan was recommended to me this time around! Rawan is trustworthy, knowledgeable, and hard-working. She was easy to get in touch with and very compassionate when interacting with/advising me. She was exceptional in her communication with the opposing counsel and in the courtroom. I got the best results I could have asked for. Honestly, after my first meeting with Rawan, I felt confident that this time was going to be different and, luckily, I was right. I cannot say enough great things about Rawan. Highly recommend!!

I really really suggest obtaining Noel Rivers as a lawyer. She is not only a great lawyer but she actually listens and communicates. She was so hard working on my case and got me a great settlement that I deserved. If it wasn’t for her hard work I don’t think I would have recieved my settlement and got justice. I have nothing but gratitude and praise for the manner in which Ms. River’s handled my case especially being that I am 3,000 miles away from Her and never personally met her. Ms. Rivers always answered my phone calls and email, kept on top of the case and kept me completely informed over the 2-year period that the case was pending. Ms. Rivers is very meticulous in strategizing and proficient and aggressive in her ability to litigate without folding AND getting the result that is deserved. I would 100% use Ms. River’s services again when and if needed AND would highly recommend her to anyone needing her services. Ms. Rivers is an intelligent fighter and she knows how to win.

Genevieve represented me in my uncontested divorce case, which involved no kids. She was very clear and patient, always ensuring I understood the divorce process and remaining transparent throughout our entire engagement. Her openness kept me informed and at ease. She was my biggest advocate. She made sure she heard my story and helped me be creative during my alimony and asset divisions. I was the higher earner, and we built a strong case that I didn't have to pay alimony. I highly recommend her, especially if you're looking for either separation and/or an uncontested divorce process.

I was involved in a situation were my employer retaliated against me and co-workers because of our political affiliation. We bought our case to Sheila and right from the beginning she discussed case law and our chances of winning the case. We made the right choice and hired Sheila and our case was settled because of her relentless pursuit for justice in our case.

Sheila was very attentive, informative and showed great interest in my case. She returned my calls promptly and answered my many questions without frustration. I was confident that she had a wealth of knowledge on the whistleblowing laws and she was able to explain them to me in terms that I could understand, without me having a law degree. She is a strong lawyer, who kept on top of my case without leaving me out of the decision making process. I trust her.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Hackensack, New Jersey?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
