I read the reviews and made an appointment to meet Di Lullo. Office is in an old house (no problem except door lock doesnt work) I arrive on time and wait 15 minutes only to be informed that Di Lullo isnt available but ill be meeting with Nick Kokis. I sent several documents the day before the meeting. While being shown to the conference room i comment on the nice wood freplace and asked if it was real. The older lady said it was. The whole time i was there the wood didnt make any pops or other nises a real fire would. I looked closer, it was an electric/propane fire place with asbestos fake looking 'logs'. They dont even know the fire isnt a real wood burning fire. Anyway Kokis shows up. When we strt tlkin i asked him if he reviewed the documents i sent him the day before. He said no and excused himself while he went and printed them out. He couldnt even have them printed out before our meeting even if he didnt read them. We talked and before the hour i was guaranteed for our meeting he excused himself because he had to go talk t some judge who was calling him and waiting on the phone. So meetin started15 mnutes late, he wasnt prepared and he left the meeting 15 minutes early with a promise to call me the next day. He never did. Neither did Di Lullo, who i wounder even exists. Upon leaving the older lady had to fiddle with the front door to let me out. This clown show was a total waste of time for me as i left work to go there. Forget this place. Di Lullo doesn't show up and Kotis is unprepared, inconsiderate and incompetent. Im glad i found out before giving any money. Be warned. Find another attorney.

This lawyer is very knowledgeable and was very helpful. He answered my questions and lead me to a site where I could find out if I had been sued. I would hire him if I were to face a civil suit and I would recommend him if anyone I know needed that type of service. Very Grateful

Quite Frankly, I can't think of a better attorney in the state of New Jersey than Phil Stern. He got my case dismissed against one of the biggest collection Law Firms in the business and a Judge who always seemed to side with the collectors. I thought I hadn't a bats chance in h*ll. I signed on to the suit thinking it was my last hope. I was so happy I framed the dismissal letter. I can't recommend Phil Stern enough!!!!

Patricia Powers-Simonelli represented me in a divorce. The marriage lasted decades and there were some assets. My ex and I had come to an agreement on the division of the assets, although he waivered back and forth. Pat listened to me, understood how I wanted the divorce handled, understood that I did not want to be spending loads of time going over old records, coming up with budgets, expenses, going to court, etc. This was in complete contrast to my ex's attorney, who I felt wasted time, caused the completion of unnecessary paperwork, filed forms incorrectly, etc. Pat found errors in the legal papers and time frames that could have presented numerous problems for me. Pat is extremely knowledgeable and very efficient. She kept me posted via emails and was available beyond regular office hours. I appreciate that Pat respected my wishes to just "have it be done with". I believe Pat did a great job for me and definitely kept my budget in mind. I was very impressed with Pat and would use her again for legal matters and highly recommend her.

I retained Ms. Patricia Powers- Simonelli post divorce for parenting time and child support. Her knowledge of the field is exceptional and her fees are reasonable. She is a cut and dry, no nonsense kind of person and will tell it to you like it is. She was spot on when it came to knowing what the courts generally award and why they do so. I 100%+ recommend her to anyone trying to get through the emotional process of having the court involved in deciding parenting time and child support.

Ashley is – by far – the BEST divorce attorney, and if she can take on your case, you are VERY fortunate. Ashley is brilliant, knows the law extremely well and is worth every penny. I was amazed when there were times she would actually argue against herself (and me!) just to make sure my case was airtight, and that she was positioning me the strongest way possible. Not only is she phenomenal and a badass for being able to outmaneuver the most narcissistic, dirtiest and unethical adversaries, but she has the biggest heart. In all sincerity, Ashley truly wanted my children to be safe and well, and stopped at nothing until this was secured. I can't say enough about how talented and wonderful she is, or how lucky I am to have had her represent me.

Ashley is an excellent lawyer. I would recommend her and her staff to anyone needing a divorce or family lawyer. She helped me throughout my long and drawn out very contentious divorce. We were in mediation with another very sub par lawyer, and she helped me to de-escalate many times and stay the course, as well as help me ensure that I understood repercussions of certain decisions being made in our settlement agreement. I don't know what I would have done throughout this process without her guidance and knowledge of NJ family law. Her staff is very organized and prompt. Can not recommend her enough.

  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Hackensack, New Jersey?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
