I was not going to hire Victoria. At the time I needed a criminal attorney and that is not what Victoria does. I was referred to her for advice. By the end of our conversation she had given me such great advice on how to handle my case that I decided to hire her. I the end it was the right call because she and her associates were able to quickly and professionally settle what was a very, very messy case. They were always quick to respond with thoughtful and intelligent advice and ideas, treating my case like a priority every step of the way.

Victoria Pekerman is sharp and focused and she gets it! Victoria helped my family to successfully defend a severely inflated personal injury suit which could have completely wiped out the family's assets. She has always been an advocate and advisor on many other legal issues ranging from personal to business. She is sensitive to the people involved - yet is firm and steadfast and the results speak for themselves with 100% success!

Victoria represented my company in a commercial litigation/contract claim case that was brought by one of our vendors. Victoria was extremely thorough and methodical in reviewing extensive contract and supporting documentation for our case to build evidence and "poke holes" in our opponents' case. She was very well prepared for the hearing in front of the judge and conducted herself in a very calm, persuasive and assertive manner. Her meticulous approach to our defense resulted in our opponents agreeing to a settlement on a very favorable terms. Overall - I highly recommend Victoria's services!

Chris did a great job with my case. I had no prior record and he was able to help me through the PTI Process. The most impressive thing he was able to do was to reduce the amount of probation time that was originally offer, in addition to community service. He was able to review the facts of the case with the Prosecutor and due to the fact of my very low involvement, the Prosecutor agreed that what he had originally put on the table was a bit much. When it was time for my Expungement, Chris contacted me right away to get the process started, and now my record is fully clean because of it. Thank you for everything!

Christopher did a great job defending me for my 2nd DUI. He worked tirelessly and was extremely prepared. His knowledge regarding the laws helped my case immensely. Most importantly he made a VERY difficult circumstance easier to get through. I felt calm and confident as I went to court. I'm positive my outcome was much better because of him. I highly recommend Christopher and the law firm of Travis Tormey.

Doug handled a potential case for me years ago. He was a God send. I had no money for an attorney and Doug helped me any way. Everything worked out in my favor. I am so grateful that he was not only able to help me but he was willing to help. My would have been changed for the worst had he not been involved. I would recommend him to anyone wanting an honest attorney.

I met Doug at an event at a friends home. He introduced himself to me and we began a conversation immediately. I asked him what he did for a living and when he said lawyer, I took advantage of the situation and asked him about the business trouble I was in with my business. I ran a multi million dollar company and it was in trouble. I had seen lawyers before Doug and in fact was using one at that time. Doug offered unique ideas and thoughts on how to get out of the trouble and, excuse me "destroy" those who were trying to destroy me. I was sold, I jumped ship and retained him. It took about 9 months, a lot of meetings and court motions, but I WON. I am now riding high again. Saved my marriage and all is good. OK, the bad news (not so bad)... Doug is not cheap, but worth every sent. And, he is difficult to reach, well, until he gave me his phone number. Then you can catch him best after hours, you see, THE MAN DOES NOT SLEEP... EVER. So you can call him at 4:00am and he is like "Hey Bobby, whats up?" Its great. I could not recommend him highly enough. If you are in trouble and you want out, quickly and strongly, VERY STRONGLY, making the people who "F'ed" with you RUN and HIDE, with their attorney, then Doug is your guy. Others just cannot keep up with this Vampire... Vampire in a good way.

  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Hackensack, New Jersey?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
