Potential issues with handling of certain cases, such as evictions

2
Possible instances of providing questionable legal advice

Not an aggressive lawyer as stated on the website. Long story short North Haledon cops have the worst reputation of handing out tickets for the most minor things, I was given an unnecessary amount of tickets over what should’ve been a $50 ticket but turned into $600. I sought a lawyer and came across this lawyer and he was very understanding (or so I thought) and told me not to lose sleep over it that I’d be fine. Prior to this, I have had a clean driving record so this was my first offense. I asked him if it would be necessary to take a drivers course online and he advised me that it was fine to do so at the time. Not sure why he’d give that advice knowing I didn’t have points and that course is a waste if you do it beforehand and end up with points (had I known this I obviously wouldn’t have followed his poor advice). I wasted money on him because he didn’t defend me at all and I was given points and my drivers course that I had done was completely useless and cannot be done for another 5 years but all this I found out after the fact. North Haledon cops are the worst, the lawyers in that area all know the eachother and work for eachother and in the end it’s just a business, I just happen to be another one of his paychecks. I would’ve been less screwed over had I just paid the initial ridiculous set of tickets and taking a course afterwards. I’d give zero stars if I could, so don’t waste your time and just avoid the miserable officers in North Haledon along with the very un-aggressive useless lawyer and his fee. ———————————————————————— Replying to your response since I’m unable to post another review: Disappointed is an understatement. I received tickets that weren’t even necessary like for my air freshener. The cop tried to jerk me and you knew that, you’ve even stated yourself that that’s the reputation North Haledon holds. Since you put it all out there, all I did was go around someone who was making a right turn and didn’t even cross the yellow lines on the roads but the cop gave me tickets as if I was speeding away from a murder scene. I heard your negotiation with the prosecutor and it was more joking than anything. In fact, im not even sure I was meant to hear all of that because it was so off topic at one point I was going to interrupt and say “I can hear everything” but I was afraid at the time and just let it be. I was way too passive and should’ve fought harder for myself but instead I assumed that you would have done that for me, again clearly I was wrong. It was not a good resolution at all, the prosecutor himself said I had a clean driving record and you settled to give me points knowing this would screw me over in the long run on my driving record. And again, of course I had no questions because you gave me no other options, not to mention it was my first time being in a situation like this with a lawyer involved. It was either I accepted the plea agreement or it would only have gotten worse if I chose not to, so yeah no sh!t I had no questions and accepted it. Don’t make it seem as if you did your deed as a fair human and went all high and mighty for me because you didn’t. North Haledon = horrible cops. I wish I had known about their reputation prior but I learned my lesson now and avoid that little town at all costs. And please don’t lie on your response, you told me verbatim that I could take that drivers defensive course now at the time if I had wanted to. Not ONCE did you say to wait till after. That is specifically why I had called you that day to ask about and that is the answer you gave me and I stupidly followed my “lawyers” advice.

Sophy represented me in a child custody case. During the process she kept me informed of exactly what was going on and fought aggresively in court for my right to keep my child, which ultimately, custody was awarded to me. I am forever grateful for her work in my case and I highly recommend her.

Ms. Sedarat handled my recent divorce case and I would highly recommend her to clients looking for a trustworthy and knowledgeable attorney who will put your needs first. She kept in touch with me throughout the process, made sure I understood everything that was taking place as well as all my options and successfully negotiated a settlement that I am very pleased with. In the end, I would say that Ms. Sedarat made the divorce process as smooth and as painless as possible and, due to her diligence and dedication to her field, the divorce was finalized in a matter of weeks rather than months or years. I wholeheartedly recommend her to anyone searching for an intelligent, capable and caring attorney.

  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Hawthorne, New Jersey?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
