I first consulted Mr. Ferrara regarding some basic information and was not disappointed. After the first phone call I recognized how passionate he is about his profession and how accommodating he was towards my schedule. He was always quick to reply to e-mails or phone calls during the business days. I would definitely recommend him for anyone in need of services regarding Wills or Leases.

Chris responded to a case I posted online involving a simple mediation between my company and the division of consumer affairs department about a simple violation that I was disputing.... agreement was to simply negotiate a settlement for the amount of $500 or for the full price of $1,500 take it to trial in municipal court. I paid him in full prepared to go to trial... he made a couple of phone calls and negotiating a simple settlement via email and phone and then never even appeared in court... he did $500 worth of work however never refunded me the balance and then hung up the phone on me after questioning him... this was all after not returning my phone calls or emails during the whole time span before court...

I had a traffic accident and wanted to change the court date that was mandated in the ticket I received. I couldn't be in town on that day due to a business meeting out of state. I had hired Chris after looking in Avvo and I was glad that I found him. I called him on Friday and since there wasn't a lot of time to file for date change with the court, he even came to my house to get me to sign papers. He was very responsive and kept me informed and not only got the court date changed but tried to get my points removed. On the court date, he came very early and met with the prosecutor and got the points removed and I was the first person in the court for the judge to hear my case and change the charge to a no point one and even got a civil reservation to protect me from future law suits from the accident. ( no one was hurt) Thanks Chris . I highly recommend him for anyone else in similar situation as me. HD

I hired Mr. Ferrara to write a letter to a corporation which he did a bit late but I was still happy with the contents. I them hired him to follow up with the corporation and paid him. He hasn't returned phone calls or emails and it has been over a couple of months. Very disappointed.

Mr. Ferrara is extremely knowledgeable and quite professional regarding law. I spoke to him on a few occasions and he is highly intelligent and eager to apply his expertise in achieving the best possible outcome for his clients. I plan to use his services in the near future for some real estate transactions.

I cannot recommend Patricia Lawrence Kolaras enough for anyone seeking an entertainment or trademark attorney. She truly is a SHERO in her field. Patricia went above and beyond to help us secure our Shero Coffee Club trademark, especially when another company tried to acquire the same name. Her expertise and knowledge of trademark law are unparalleled. Thanks to her dedication, we won the initial battle against the other company and have now submitted for the actual trademark. The SHERO COFFEE CLUB is truly blessed to have Patricia's excellent services on our side because she will bang up anyone fighting against her. If you need someone to go to war for you for your trademark, Patricia is the one to call.

PLK Law Group is a good example of appropriate humanism leading polished professionalism and expert service. Legal has been the primary expense of our creative startup, but PLK's pricing is competitive with the marketplace, especially when one considers the rare, elite quality of services provided. We went to PLK with an idea, and they shepherded us through the straights of IP, continue to keep us blameless and secure, and magically facilitate the tools we need to skillfully manage our good fortune. Ms. Patricia inspires confidence in singular fashion, and leads her well trained team by sleek example and frosty insight. To creative projects at the least, I can testify the following: If you must have peace of mind, this is a good firm to hire. Benjamin Sanchez Legend of the Cipher, LLC CEO

Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. Who will be handling my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Hillsborough, New Jersey?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
