Richard is brilliant at what he does! I have been with him since 2015. We bought our home under his guidance and did not feel a single pinch of all the hassles we go through in the process. He made sure we are prepared for everything at every step of the way. When it was time to sell, he again jumped in with his expertise to help us sail through smoothly for a complicated and time consuming closing. He also helped us with our defaulting tenant litigation, it was particularly very difficult situation given the profile of tenant, he very diligently and intelligently helped us get out of the situation. I would highly recommend him for his services.

Rich Devita is a class legal act. We had a real estate sale and closing that was extraordinarily complex and time-consuming, thanks to Covid and other issues. Rich was the steady legal hand leading us through the way. He always demonstrated strong patience, good judgment, and sound advice. And he charges a very fair rate with no surprises. I strongly recommend Rich Devita for your real estate and other legal concerns.

I used Rich Devita’s services when purchasing a home in Jersey City, NJ. When it was time to sell 7 years later, I went back to him. He represented me very well on both occasions. My takeaways from my interactions with Rich are that he is very knowledgeable, communicates well, is straightforward, and protects his clients’ interests. I enjoyed working with Rich and would highly recommend him.

Rich's broad range of experience in real estate deals really made a difference for us. If it's just a simple closing, Rich could do that for you with his eyes closed. Ours was not an easy case. It was complicated by negotiations with creditors, a time crunch, and family issues. We'll be using him again, soon, and can recommend him to others without reservation.

John has closed two homes for my family in Hoboken (2012) and Jersey City (2021). Both experiences exceeded my expectations, as we've heard closings can have all sorts of things pop up at the last second. This wasn't the case with John - he had us gather all paperwork, statements, etc... in a timely, organized matter so there was no last minute scrambling for anything. Our Jersey City home close was were John really showed his talents, as the seller was incredibly difficult to deal with and was refusing to budge on several issues. Fortunately John was able to negotiate several items that popped up during the inspection. If we were ever to buy another home, John would be the only attorney I would call.

He helped me close on a very, very long (8 months), complicated foreclosure house with an oil tank and he was there, every step of the way to make sure things didn't fall through and that I wouldn't get put in a bad situation. He also did not charge me as much as I'm sure he could have, being as long as the process was. I highly recommend him for any house closing situations!

I have reached out to Lori and her team for several family law matters and she has worked diligently to keep my paperwork moving through the system, especially in the middle of a pandemic. She is knowledgeable about the law and legal system, experienced & has gone above and beyond for me and my family. She is especially compassionate with family and children. I highly recommend Lori for all family related law. I never had to go through paperwork on my own , she explained everything and was thorough throughout the entire process. Put her brain to the challenge, you won’t be disappointed.

Richard represented me for a DUI, he was extremely thorough. I was sentenced to a 3 month suspension of my drivers license, which would have been a year suspension without the help of this attorney. His fee was more than reasonable for the work and success in which he provided me with.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Hoboken, New Jersey?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
