5

Cons
1
Can be direct and blunt in communication, which may not suit all clients
“It was hard to hear and there was some yelling by both of us.”
2
Tendency to bill for administrative tasks and overhead that some clients feel should be absorbed by the firm
“She bills anytime someone breathes on your file, including charges for things like opening the file to start the case and every little phone call, such as to set up conferences.”
3
High staff turnover, which can lead to inconsistency and confusion for clients
“I did not even know who was doing some of these tasks, she seems unable to retain any administrative staff for longer than 5 minutes, so you wind up getting billed for services from "Para 1", with no idea who that is.”

Amy Cores is professional, knows the laws, always made herself available anytime (even weekends), and took the time to explain actions in my case. Several times in the courthouse while Amy was not near me for a moment, other attorneys approached me telling me that she was the best in NJ and that I was in good hands. I certainly did not need the reassurance that I selected the right attorney but more impressed that her fellow colleagues spoke so highly of her. Also, her staff is kind, courteous and professional. I highly recommend Cores & Associates for your custody case.

My consultation with Amy was on a Sunday morning, proving to me that she is an unyielding (fabulously pink) workhorse. I went in feeling powerless and left feeling confident that she would advocate for me as well as my children. I was right. My case was difficult and of a delicate nature, she handled it with great care and certitude. That kind of support during such a stressful time made all the difference. Her staff was kind, responsive and professional. I am thankful they were on my side and would be happy to give reference.

Amy Cores and Associates did an amazing job on my case. From the beginning to the end, the office staff was courteous and always available to answer any questions that I had. They were compassionate about what I was going through and made a terrible situation much easier to deal with because I knew I was in good hands. Amy was always available to answer my questions and guide me in the right direction. It was a very smooth process and took the stress off of me knowing that everything would be handled correctly. Arriving at court I knew that they had my best interest and everything was done very professionally. If you want the best - Cores and Associates is where you should look. You will not be disappointed. Very pleased with the whole process.

I cannot even give this company 1 star! DO NOT USE THEM! They are terrible. They employ young office admin who took all my financial files to copy. They were returned to me a complete mess. They had been un-stapled and then just thrown in a file out of order when I collected them After an hour of trying to put them back together I had to give up. That was how much of a mess they left me with. When I told them I wanted them back as I had given them, they were surly and rude about it. I was also forced 3 times to sign a declaration that a document was accurate (under penalty of perjury) without being able to see the documents or check it for errors before hand. This is because they do everything last minute (and they admitted to this) and it is done by young admin who do not know what they are doing. When I did eventually receive a copy of the documents I had signed for, they were so factually incorrect that I was shocked. They had made up statements and there were so many basic spelling and grammatical errors that a high school student would have done a better job. I even had to correct these for them too. Despite these corrections, the documents were then sent to the court without being corrected and could not be amended. This made me look like I was a liar and the lawyers look incompetent! They will not call you back when they say they will and I have recorded all my conversations with this company. They are rude, not supportive and just about the money. They do not communicate basic information and employ one lawyer part-time, but will not tell you this up front. Anyone who wants to know more can contact me freely. I am making a formal complaint against them. STAY AWAY.

Michael Cohn was recommended to me by a friend who said "Michael is the king of contracts." That turns out to be true and more. Michael listens, pays attention to his client's needs and offers sage council. I can't recommend him highly enough. As if this is not enough - Michael is reasonably priced!

It is a great experience and a delight to work with Mr. Weber. He is very knowledgable and kindly responded to all our questions. Being first-time home buyers we were pretty nervous of not being duped. Mr. Weber's confidence in dealing with the seller's attorney and helping us understand the legal terminology to make an educated decision helped alleviate all our worries. Highly recommend this law firm.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Howell, New Jersey?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
