I had not met Jay Freireich, yet had a good "gut" feeling about him during a brief telephone conversation: he was intelligent and direct. He then proved this with an honest and reliable character, in communicating facts of the case readily, keeping me involved, being accessible, and meeting established timeframes. His actions are to listen, understand, persevere, work hard, and be forthright, Jay Freireich is an ethical person, and a gem of an attorney -- May he always be blessed, and have the ability to bless his clients! Thank-you from the bottom of my heart!

Jay stayed the course and kept the costs as low as his could as he settled my very complex case. He told me his hourly rate would be lower than the contingency fee. HOW MANY LAWYERS would do that…. VERY FEW!!!! He offered a ear or shoulder whenever I needed it in order to get me to the next step. My case has been closed for two years, and guess what - he is still there for me and my family. I can’t say enough about Jay except he is an pit bull when he needs to be - but FIRST AND FOREMOST a HUMAN BEING, unlike other attorneys I have had the displeasure of dealing with. Thank you JAY!

Mr. Freireich is an excellent lawyer. He represented me on a tax case for about a year and half. The potential financial impact of this case on my family was significant. Mr. Freireich's technical and legal expertise led us to a very favorable settlement. I was extremely confident of his handling of this case and his extensive knowledge of Tax Law. Not only was he legally sharp, but he managed his affairs with the highest ethical standards. I am sure I was not his only client but he understood how important this case was to me and he always retuned phone calls and emails in a timely fashion. He kept me updated on our progress during each phase of the legal process. I was very grateful for his help, his legal expertise, and his genuine concern for his clients. I would highly recommend Mr. Freireich for his expert legal services.

Pros
1
Highly knowledgeable and experienced lawyer
“He had already formulated a plan of action based on our initial phone call. That's when I knew I had made the right decision. I was also impressed to learn he had previously argued and won before our highest court in the land!”
2
Provides clear and effective communication
“Communication: Like it or not, I've experienced communication 7 days/week, when (he's) on vacation.. Clear concise, sometimes to a fault, and I sometimes get lost in the weeds, but I'd rather have more than less.”
3
Maintains the highest ethical standards
“Not only was he legally sharp, but he managed his affairs with the highest ethical standards.”
4
Demonstrates strong loyalty and commitment to clients
“Loyalty to the client way beyond the call of duty, When I have to come into town to be present, he will not allow me to stay in a hotel, but welcomes me into his home and guest room, and to eat at his table.”
5
Achieves favorable outcomes for clients
“Without a doubt played a key role in identifying the salient issues and closing this deal for us. We highly recommend Jay.”
Cons
1
Billing practices can be a concern for some clients
“His last month fees were outrageous and I took him to arbitration. The arbitration was in his county and he knew 1 attorney. They only took off @ $1,000.”
2
Occasional communication issues or not being on the same page with clients
“I sometimes get lost in the weeds, but I'd rather have more than less.”

He has a background in finance, and was very knowledgeable in projecting what my needs would be in the future. Sam kept me informed and prepared me for what was likely to transpire. I had complete confidence in him. He did not disappoint ! Everything worked out exactly as he assured me it would. Aside from all the wonderfut professional things I can say about Sam..... Sam Stoia represented me for almost a year during my divorce. When things got stressful and problems arose, Sam was always there to put out the fires. He was quick to call and/or email me back and extremely prepared in court. He has been very informative and knowledgeable throughout my entire case and made everything much easier on my end. He was also honorable in the sense that he never wanted to waste my money on frivolous court battles throughout the case. In the end, I was very happy with the divorce settlement and most of all forever grateful for Sam's work during the worst year of my life.

What Questions Should I Ask Before Hiring a Lawyer?

Hiring the right lawyer is crucial for the success of your case. Here are some important questions to ask during your initial consultation:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.

Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. Who will be handling my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Livingston, New Jersey?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
