After years of battling with my children's father in and out of court, I never thought that I would feel as supported or as prioritized as Melissa Willem has made me feel. I have worked with many lawyers for a variety of different reasons during the last 20 years - from buying and selling my homes, municipal court tickets, help with handling my family members estates, my divorce and then the custody and support motions that came after. I was represented by three different family lawyers over the years before I even met Melissa. After having those experiences through the years, I can truly say that I have never met a lawyer like Melissa, and honestly didn't think lawyers cared about much more than getting their bills paid. But with Melissa, I never felt this way for even a moment. From the moment I first spoke with Melissa and decided to retain her (during COVID), I felt like she was on my side and fought for me regardless of how much money I had or how hard the process became. She was honest with me, always explained complicated legal issues in a way that I could understand, and always made me feel important and prioritized. She even talked me through very difficult and overwhelming situations at night and on weekends. I felt supported and heard and will be forever grateful for her support through very stressful times, especially when my ex-husband would relapse or the police became involved. She was patient and understanding and kind. I was able to rebuild my life and focus on my children because of the perspective and advice she offered me in the few years I have known her - even when we were not in Court or getting ready to go to Court. I highly recommend Melissa, you will not be disappointed!

I retained Melissa Willem to represent me in a child custody case and she took my retainer and then never answered any phone calls or responded to any emails. She didn’t even show up to court which was virtual ! She left me high and dry without legal representation and still won’t return my calls. I DO NOT RECOMMEND MELISSA WILLEM !

I hired Melissa for a case and it was a positive experience from the very first interaction. Melissa & her assistant were always timely with correspondence, went above & beyond to accommodate my hearing disability, and won my case in court! If you are looking for a lawyer who is passionate, determined & energetic about her job & clients- look no further and definitely hire Melissa Willem.

Melissa Willem represented me in what turned out to be an extremely difficult divorce last year. I was nervous about retaining an attorney, since I have heard so many horror stories about attorneys who don’t listen and just pile up legal fees higher and higher without caring. But Melissa changed that perspective right from the start. I felt comfortable with her from the moment I met her, and that never changed throughout my whole case. She was always honest and up front about what to expect so that I would be prepared for potential outcomes, but always fought for what was best for me and my children. She was understanding and compassionate and always went above and beyond to help me through difficult parts of my case, more than what you would expect from your lawyer. She always explained complicated issues in a way that I could understand and spent as much time as I needed to feel comfortable with whatever action we had to take. I would absolutely highly recommend Melissa, without question!

Bill Wright is an extraordinary attorney. I retained Bill to represent me as a Plaintiff in a personal injury matter and he was responsive, professional and on top of his game throughout the litigation process. I am very pleased with the outcome I received in a fairly short amount of time during COVID time. I was also very impressed with his brother, David Wright, as well as his delightful support staff. I received exceptional service from the moment I made my first phone call to the Wright Law Firm. I will not hesitate to use their services in the future. Bill Wright is an expert in his field and a top notch attorney.

William was up front about the length of time that was typical to complete a case such as mine so that my expectations were appropriate. Gave me great advice throughout the process, and really handled the court dates well so that I was prepared. He also let me know what he thought were good ways and bad ways to approach the case and kept me from making bad decisions. He gets my highest recommendation!

Mr. Wright is a local family man. He has many local connections and expert witnesses from a lifetime of networking. He has your best interest in mind. His firm is friendly and professional from the moment you walk in the door. I have never seen a case settled so quickly. Though all cases are different , ours was not nerve racking because Mr. Wright and his staff did all the work. Don't let someone's negligence or slum lord behavior ruin your life. Remember to document you issues. My husband will always have pain but now at least he can keep the wolves from the door. Why suffer in silence due to someone else's carelessness? Mr. Wright changed our lives.

Collen Clark was wonderful. She answered all my questions, no matter how many times I called or e-mailed. Everyone was always very pleasant and helpful. I hired her to set up a Special Needs Trust for my son. I will be going back for her to do my estate planning, and would absolutely recommend Ms. Clark.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Manahawkin, New Jersey?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
