My husband and I hired Shari to draft our will upon the birth of our first child and the process was easy and seamless. Most of our communication was done efficiently over email, and Shari was always very responsive and explained everything thoroughly. The entire process was smooth and straightforward. I would recommend Shari to anyone who is also looking for an attorney to help out with a will.

Ms. Astalos did wills, power of attorney documents etc. for us. This process was quick, easy and affordable. She explained everything to us and made it simple to understand. We feel so much better having everything in place for our family now.

Shari came recommended by several people in our community when we were looking for an attorney to help draft wills and other associated legal documents. From the start, she was professional, knowledgeable and easy to work with. She walked us through the process, answered all of our questions and was patient and accommodating. She provided guidance when requested. I highly recommend working with Shari.

Shari Astalos did my husband and I's will/ power of attorney/ healthcare proxy, which we had been putting off doing for years, assuming it would be a beaurocratic nightmare. Shari facilitated the whole process in such a way that it was completely painless and not the slightest bit time consuming, while still educating us about everything that we were doing and promptly answering any questions that we had (without making us feel stupid for not knowing;). She even came to our house to have us sign what needed to be signed. She couldn't have been more flexible, knowledgeable, professional, or accommodating. I can't recommend her enough to anyone who wants to get this done (as a healthcare provider I can attest- everyone really should!)

Shari goes above and beyond the call of duty. She is efficient, compassionate, patient and extremely reasonably priced. She comes to your home on the weekend with her notary husband to do all the paperwork quickly and easily without you having to make alternative plans. She offers advice but isn't pushy and is knowledgable but not at all overbearing. She takes care of details and you may rest assured you are in excellent hands. When my husband had a last minute concern about a clause, Shari altered it within hours. I can't say enough about her and wholeheartedly recommend her.

Marilyn was our attorney for both selling and buying our homes. She was always available to answer our questions, so pleasant to work with and incredibly knowledgeable about what terms to accept and which ones to push back on. We always felt she had our best interest in mind and would not only recommend her but she will always be our real estate attorney moving forward.

Marilyn completed two real estate transactions for me and I would hire her again without reservation. She embodies what everyone expects in a professional: she is meticulous, responsible and dedicated to her client's interests and, not inconsequentially in my experience, a fighter when she needs to be and a diplomat otherwise. She is personable, patient in explaining the fine points of contracts and accessible. I recommend her very highly.

Marilyn is an awesome attorney to work with. This was my second experience using Marilyn's services, and I felt like I brought her the most crazy real estate situations. She was extremely proactive and knowledgeable in appropriately handling both circumstances. She also was very patient with my super detail-oriented, impatient nature, which reassured me that things were competently being taken care of. I am used to having to chase people for a living to get things done, and Marilyn was actually beating me to the punch in this regard. I definitely will use her again!

This is the one attorney who I feel continually looks out for my interests. I have used him for copyright infringement, trademark infringement and franchise matters. His research is thorough, his preparation is imbeccable, the depth of his knowledge amazes, and his presence in Court is commanding.

  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Millburn, New Jersey?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
