I’ve never met an attorney quite like Jose Echevarria. As a tenant dealing with a hostile landlord—not because of any payment issues but due to unfair treatment and poor property conditions—I needed someone who truly cared and was willing to take a stand for us. Jose is that rare attorney who believes in fairness and fights for his clients’ rights, not just for payment disputes, but because he genuinely cares about doing what’s right. In 30 years, I’ve never encountered a lawyer so patient, understanding, and driven to protect his client’s best interests. Jose took the time to listen, explain, and guide us through every step of the process. He didn’t just use his legal knowledge to gain an advantage; he was fair, ethical, and respectful to everyone involved. For us, it was never about creating conflict—we just wanted protection from a landlord who went out of her way to make us feel unwelcome, even though we never missed a single rent payment. When we moved into our rental in Bloomfield, the issues started almost immediately: broken heating, bathroom leaks, poorly installed floors, and even a window that popped out completely, posing a safety risk to our young children. Despite informing the landlord about these issues, she dismissed us and even told us we could leave if we didn’t like it. But we knew our rights, and with Jose’s help, we were finally able to have the necessary repairs done. However, this only led the landlord to retaliate further, filing false claims to try and evict us without cause. Jose showed up for us with the kind of wisdom and dedication you’d expect from someone with decades of experience. He proved every unfounded claim wrong, protecting our record and ensuring the case was dismissed. I can’t express how grateful we are. Jose is everything you’d want in an attorney—knowledgeable, diligent, respectful, and incredibly skilled. I don’t usually leave reviews, but attorneys like Jose deserve recognition. To any tenant who feels unheard and disrespected, look no further. This is money well spent, and I would hire him again without hesitation. Thank you, Jose, for your hard work and integrity—you truly went above and beyond, and we couldn’t have done it without you!

Of course not an easy process overall, but Nick worked with us, made time, listened, educated us. He prepared all the paperwork and guided us through the process. I think we consulted 3-4 mediators, and knew quickly we wanted to work with Nick. We are very glad we did!

To say our case was a tough one is an understatement. Most talking points were met with opposing views. Needless to say, most meetings were intense, resulting in a more-than-typical number of meetings to finish. There were many times when it looked like mediation may not be for us; however, Nick DeMetro stuck with us and patiently guided us through this tumultuous process. He was invested in helping us find a common ground. Throughout the process, I came to know that he was not just doing his job, but that he truly cared. He also showed a deep mindfulness for our children, and that always meant so much to me. He proved to be reliable, loving, and trustworthy. Divorce is never where I imagined I would be. I believed that no matter the challenge, I could make my marriage work. Sadly, I was wrong. When you realize you have to make one of the toughest decisions of your life, you need someone by your side that can be trusted in a time of insecurity and fear. Nick was/is that person. I am so grateful that I found a person like Nick to rely on from beginning to end.

After meeting with a few mediators, we finally settled on Nicholas and we are very happy that we did. He was a really good listener who asked us the right questions so we could arrive at a fair agreement. His rate was extremely competitive and he was very efficient during our meetings (we got a lot done in each session), While the process in general is a stressful one, his supportive approach made it comfortable and safe. He was a man of his word - he did everything that he said he would and he never surprised us with unexpected charges. He also articulated the whole process well and by the time we met with the judge, we had everything that we needed and we were well prepared. I don't typically (i.e., almost never) write reviews, but my experience with Nicholas was so positive that I wanted to write this one.

I had a situation where my former employer refused to pay benefits that was owed me. This wasn't a simple case by any stretch of the imagination given it involved stock options, the balance of my time, and more. Evelyn took on this case and did a great job. Her first contact with my former employee yielded the results I was looking for. My former employer paid everything that was due me. I will gladly use Evelyn again. Brilliance personified.

What Questions Should I Ask Before Hiring a Lawyer?

Hiring the right lawyer is crucial for the success of your case. Here are some important questions to ask during your initial consultation:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. Who will be handling my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the expected timeline for my case?

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Montclair, New Jersey?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
