My experience with Michele made a very stressful situation go above and beyond my expectations. She was extremely knowledgeable and clear on all aspects of the procedures to be done. She was always there for me when and if I had any questions. (which unfortunately was quite often) She was very timely on our appointments. She was truly a Professional.

Michele stepped in while I was in the midst of trying to deal with my ex's attorney by myself and it was clear that it was not going to work out well for me. From our first meeting to the court date, everything went so smoothly and I know it was because of her. Michele is knowledgeable, professional and prompt but at the same time, compassionate. It's clear that she truly cares about her work and her clients. I couldn't have asked for a better divorce attorney.

Michele Hart successfully handled my marital settlement agreement and child support case. She has a very calm demeanor in and out of the courtroom. Michele has an exceptionally strong eye for detail and a strong sense of organization. She is an extremely talented attorney who cares a great deal about her clients and her firm. I have been divorced for over a year now and we still remain friends. She takes great pride in her work.

Candace is a excellent lawyer with a great staff that support her and her clients. When I first came to her I knew nothing about divorce or what I was getting ready to do. I explained to her my situation and that my first priority was protecting my children. She did not sugar coat anything. She explained the cost and how long this could take with this being a hostile divorce. She was spot on in the end with cost and time. She was very responsive always took my calls if she could or returned them quickly and the same with emails. When going through this kind of divorce you need to deal with lots of different people from therapists to investigators and real estate people and everyone in between. She knows them all and helps you find the right one for your case. When you start learning about divorce law in NJ it can make you very angry especially if you are the main earner in the house. Candace was very good at letting me vent my frustration with the law. Then she would calm me down and explain carefully to me what I need to do within the law to get through this divorce. It was kind of funny looking back at some of the simple things she did that got me through this. While meeting with a mediator she could hear in my voice or see my posture change and she would grab hand and give it a lite squeeze basically getting me to be quite before I said something I would regret. She came through for me and I got to keep my boys and as a bonus I got to keep the house. She worked with me the whole way through in all aspects of the divorce. Thank you very much Candace

Natalia is a great lawyer! She is smart, thorough and highly competent. Her knowledge of labor law is extensive and she uses every bit of it to the benefit of her client. Her writing skills are impeccable! She put my case together so well and she did it with class and integrity; without sacrificing the assertiveness needed to get the job done. The way she brought it to my former employer was extremely satisfying and I would recommend her again and again.

Ms. Shishkin helped me navigate an employment law issue. She was professional, responsive and helpful. She was able to communicate the law and likely responses from my employer in a way that was very helpful. Ms. Shiskin also helped to provide concrete advice for interacting with my employer that was equally as helpful. Her superb advice and professional demeanor was in stark contrast to other attorneys I interviewed to assist with my particular employment law issue. Other attorneys’ advice was not as helpful or concrete and their focus seemed solely on litigating. Ms. Shiskin used her legal expertise to help me reach the best possible resolution for my particular employment law issue. I recommend her legal expertise and commend her client focus and strong strategic approach.

  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Morristown, New Jersey?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
