I am the founder of a non-profit organization Mitr (friend), which started in 1998 to primarily help first-generation immigrant women who are victims of domestic violence and abuse. I got the opportunity to work with Jane Ellen Doran while helping one of the domestic violence victims Madhavi. It is very hard to find good attorneys, especially pro bono ones. Even though she was providing free service, Jane took utmost care and she was very thorough and committed throughout the case and exhibited professionalism all along. Her compassion, ethics, and integrity were outstanding. Right from day one, I had great confidence that she will provide professional service and she lived up to that and got justice for Madhavi. I am a firm believer in our judicial system but attorneys do make a huge difference in the outcome of the case. Jane made a huge impact in Madhavi's life by not only getting her justice but by doing so it helped Madhavi regain confidence in our judicial system. Going through a divorce and especially through domestic violence is in itself a tough ordeal but at least through great attorneys like Jane, people can be assured that justice will prevail. Jane Ellen assisted me with a very complicated and contentious custody matter. Jane Ellen demonstrated an excellent command of the applicable laws and was able to prepare legal briefs for the judge that clearly and persuasively outlined my position. The court filings that she prepared were clearly well researched and far superior to the opposing counsel’s work. Prior to appearing before the judge, Jane Ellen prepared me for the process and gave me a realistic view of the possible outcomes. She did an excellent job in the court room articulating our position. While opposing counsel often tried to be aggressive and use unsavory tactics, Jane Ellen always took the high road and this was clearly respected by the judge. After several court appearances addressing procedural matters and framing our arguments for the judge she was able to convince the opposing counsel that we had a high likelihood of prevailing in the case and negotiated a settlement that resolved the matter. After the conclusion of our case Jane Ellen has remained available to guide me through issues that have arisen in the interpretation of the settlement agreement. Jane Ellen has helped guide me through a very difficult period of my life and provided me frank and direct legal advice while still being empathetic with how painful and emotional these matters are to negotiate/litigate.
