I hired this office for a very simple case regarding visitation and child support. I was told multiple times that the ease of the case would not allot for more money than the amount of my retainer agreement and that I would get a refund. I paid the retainer agreement in full. I supplied the supporting documentation including requesting previous records myself, weeks before the case. Somehow they still only filed my counter application a day before my court date. Court was ok, although I felt it could have been much shorter however the attorney didn’t do anything to stop the other party from rambling on and on. After court I received an email stating I’d hear from the legal assistant regarding my refund. Instead I received a bill for $2,000 extra dollars. I looked through the itemization, shocked but accepting I am no expert. The billed items charged hundreds of dollars for my inquiry with the office (before I even decided about being represented), phone calls that were only few minutes long where I was charged an hour or more (I matched to my phone records), emails that didn’t ever happen, record requests where I had supplied the records myself, and several other items that were entirely made up. I disputed the charges, providing my own records (like my phone bill and email record that in no way could have been fabricated), and was told that I didn’t understand how things worked. I offered to compromise and started doing my own research. It turned out this is a repeat issue with this office and now I have to file a formal dispute that will end up with me in court/mediation again. Be careful- I guarantee you’ll be overcharged if they think you can pay it.

I hired the Law Firm of Menar & Menar in 2012. I was going through a divorce, and was not only looking for legal advice, but a lawyer who would guide me through this difficult situation. Menar & Menar, Attorneys at Law, were compassionate, understanding, and explained all my choices so that I could make the best decisions for myself and my daughter.

I contacted Menar & Menar because I was losing custody of my son. Ms. Menar was able to stop this and I recovered the custody of my son. Ms. Menar was my only hope when I thought I was going to lose my son. My experience with Menar & Menar was stupendous through and through. Ms. Menar knows her craft and walks the extra mile with you. I was represented better than I could have imagined. My needs were put first and I was treated as a friend rather than a number. My opinions were valued and my doubts were always reassured. My nerves were calmed and the process was always explained to me. She was completely understanding, professional and worked very diligently to the end. Ms. Menar fought hard for me. She went above and beyond and did everything she could to ensure a great outcome. I could not have asked for a better law firm or attorney. I am so grateful and I highly recommend her and her firm.

I hired Paula to represent me for my restraining order, divorce and custody battle. She truly is very efficient and so experienced. The whole process was very long but I never felt as Paula was not looking out for me. She was the voice that I never knew I had. There were many days where I lost hope but in the end she made sure I got what was right for me. She helped me grow and she provided me the assistance I needed. Not only was she able to defend me from an unjust accusation, her calm and empathetic demeanor offered emotional succor to myself and those I care about most. Paula has stood by every one of my requests and guided me through the entire lengthy process. Though we faced challenges, she did not falter. Her thorough research provided us the pathway we needed to rise to victory. I will only recommend Paula as I have never been nor have I ever seen anyone treated better. I am proud to be a Paula's client and will continue to retain them for all legal matters that may arise as I know I am in the best hands.

Outstanding Real Estate Attorney – Highly Recommend! I recently had the pleasure of working with Tara Parente from The Law Offices of Nazario and Parente LLC for a real estate transaction, and I couldn’t be more impressed with her professionalism and expertise. We hired Eric Morrell to represent our daughter, after becoming very dissatisfied with her previous lawyer. From the first meeting with Eric, we left the office feeling confident and hopeful that the case would be resolved in her favor. Eric is very knowledgeable, personable, and very easy to talk to. I liked that he didn't sugarcoat anything. He and his assistant, Lauren, kept in constant contact with us so that we never had to wonder what was going on with the case. In the end, he got us the outcome that we had hoped for. We were overly satisfied with his service and I would definitely recommend him.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of New Brunswick, New Jersey?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
