I went to stay with my son for a trial separation. Within days my spouse filled for an emergency divorce. Mind you I was in another state and in poor health, I'm 77 yrs old. I had to find a lawyer in hours, because I had 24hrs to be in court. By the grace of God my son found Faith Ullman who took my case at a moments notice. After talking to Faith about my case, she assured me that she was able to go to court and represent me the next day. Do to my poor health I was able to do a conference call into court. I'm so happy she was on my side, because this woman is a tiger in court. Another great quality is she tells you what to expect and she does not nickel and dime you. The end result is everything Faith told me would happen, happened and I couldn't have been happier with the outcome.

I hired Ms. Ullmann to transfer guardianship of my handicapped brother from my then 86 year old mother to myself. The original guardianship papers were lost and the county where filed was not known. Ms. Ullmann and her staff located the original filings, worked with the origination surrogate's office to transfer guardianship. Everyone I had spoken to told me that this was going to be a long process and to not be surprised when it would not be complete for six months or more. Ms. Ullmann handled everything and had the whole process completed in two-and-a-half months. She kept me informed of problems encountered, goals reached and was always available for questions. She also ensured that the most expedient way of handling matters was used to save on all kinds of costs, including travel. Ms. Ullmann actually made what could have been a painful and stressful process 'easy' for me. Throughout she demonstrated her knowledge and expertise of family law, as well as caring for client and family. I would highly recommend her services to my friends and family.

I retained Faith Ullmann to represent me during my divorce and child custody battle. As a father seeking custody of my three year old son, I went into my first meeting with Faith feeling as though the world and legal system was against me. Faith listened intently to my situation, took careful notes and was already formulating a game plan within our first meeting. After talking with Faith, it was clear to me that not only does she have the expertise I was looking for in an attorney, but she also has a tremendous amount of compassion and genuine concern for her clients and their children. She is an absolute expert in her field and out-shined my wife’s attorney at every turn, and all with tact and professionalism. I won custody of my son, kept my house and my lifestyle. I highly recommend Faith to anyone seeking legal counsel in such matters.

Faith Ullmann is a down to earth, practical, and extremely knowledgeable matrimonial attorney. Faith managed my divorce proceeedings in a manner that gave me complete confidence that no stone would be left unturned. She is authoriative and no-nonsense where she needs to be and absolutely sensitive where sensitivity is required. She leaves no doubt that you are the absolute center of her universe during conferences and meetings with opposing counsel. Faith knows the law, is honest and forthright, is thoroughly prepared and cuts through all of the junk that would ordinarily weigh down divorce proceedings.

I chose Morris, Downing and Sherred because of their stellar reputation. Angela Paternostro-Pfister took my divorce case and I was beyond impressed and pleased with the process. The price was more than fair and the staff was courteous and kind. Above all, Angela is an amazing lawyer. Her knowledge and compassion is nothing to be looked over and should only be held in the highest regard. I will recommend this firm to anyone who wants their case to be successfully handled with efficiency and the upmost professionalism.

I met with Angela after being reffered to her by a friend. I was nervous, anxious & felt completely lost in the divorce process. Angela immediately made me feel at ease. From our first meeting, she was easy to talk to, friendly and confident in how to proceed. It’s rare to find an attorney that doesn’t thrive on a good fight.. but she’s doesn’t. Angela was instrumental in diffusing a few bad situations and kept them from getting worse. Her calm & level headed manner kept my entire divorce process a low stress experience. I’m eternally grateful to her for how everything played out for my family. I would strongly advise having a consultation with her so you can see for yourself.

  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Newton, New Jersey?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
