I recently had a highly disappointing experience with Daniel Pollak, a property tax law attorney I found online. I had to leave the country for the summer, so I entrusted Dan and his firm with what I believed to be a straightforward property tax appeal. We had just purchased the property, and the purchase price was significantly lower than the current tax assessment, making a solid case for an appeal. Since I wouldn't be in the county to handle the matter personally, I needed a competent and reliable attorney to take care of it in my absence. During our initial interactions, Dan appeared decent and responsive, which gave me confidence in retaining him. He assured us that he would file the appeal promptly. However, things went downhill immediately after we signed the agreement. Dan's last communication was to send the countersigned agreement, stating he would file the appeal that week. After that, he went radio silent. I followed up multiple times during the summer to ensure the appeal was moving forward, but received no response. Upon returning from my trip, I reached out once more. Only then did I get a response—two days later—where Dan admitted that he and his team had simply forgotten to file the appeal, and the deadline had already passed. I don't have enough data to evaluate Dan's legal expertise, but his lack of basic operational professionalism and reliability speaks volumes. Missing a critical filing deadline is a glaring oversight that reflects poorly on his firm's ability to handle even the simplest of cases. If you can't trust an attorney to meet a basic deadline, how can you trust them with anything more complex? My experience with Dan and his team was a complete letdown, and I wouldn't recommend them for any legal matters that require attention to detail and accountability.

I can't say enough great things about David A. DiBrigida and his incredible team! Last year, I was involved in a serious accident where I was struck by a car, leaving me with mounting medical bills, pain, and uncertainty about my future. From the very first consultation, David not only listened intently to my story but immediately reassured me that I was in good hands – and he certainly delivered on that promise. David and his team were with me every step of the way. Their responsiveness was simply unmatched – whether I had a question about my case, a concern about the legal process, or needed advice on dealing with my medical treatment, David and his office responded quickly and thoroughly. I never felt like just another case number; every interaction felt personal, and I was always treated with the utmost respect and care. His team was always professional, warm, and attentive, which made a stressful situation much more manageable. What truly sets David apart is his dedication. He genuinely cares about his clients and it shows in how hard he fought for me. He was relentless in pursuing the best possible outcome, ensuring I had access to the best medical care, and that every legal aspect of my case was meticulously handled. David took the time to explain every step of the process in terms I could understand, ensuring I felt empowered and informed. Thanks to his expertise and determination, I received a settlement that far exceeded my expectations – more than I could have ever imagined. If you're looking for a personal injury attorney who is not only a master at his craft but also incredibly compassionate, responsive, and supported by a first-class team, look no further than David A. DiBrigida. He turned what was a traumatic experience into one where I felt truly supported and fought for. David is a rare find, and I will forever be grateful for everything he did for me. I would recommend him 1,000 times over to anyone in need of a true advocate!

Mike and his team were wonderful to work with. Mike was recommended to us by our realtor and we were extremely pleased with the outcome. He made our home purchase a smooth and enjoyable process. He guided us with our purchase, giving us options that we didn't even realize were possible. Without Mike's help, we wouldn't be enjoying our new home. Mike went above and beyond, even coming to us for our first meeting, which was both informative and friendly. Mike's team was easy to work with and kept constant communication throughout the process. We would absolutely use Mike and his team in the future and have already recommended him to family. Thanks, Mike.

Michael LiPari and his team are phenomenal. Michael came as a recommendation to us and we could not have been more grateful for it. He made our first home purchase a smooth and enjoyable process. He is extremely knowledgeable when it comes to all aspects of home buying. Additionally, he went the extra mile to accommodate our needs whether is was finance concerns or after hour questions we needed answered. Michael and his team genuinely wanted to make sure we found the right home with the right financing for us. I cannot say enough how much his sincerity and knowledge meant to us as first time home buyers! I would recommend Michael and his team without hesitation and will be using him again for the foreseeable future should we buy another home down the road! Thanks, Mike!

Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. Who will be handling my case?

  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Roseland, New Jersey?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
