My wife and I retained Mr. Berg in connection with the purchase of our first home. From day one, and continuing throughout the entire closing process, Mr. Berg was ON THE BALL. Whether it was promptly returning my many emails or calls, or going above and beyond by clarifying the most minute details about our home purchase, Mr. Berg exceeded all expectations. If you are purchasing or selling a home in NJ, this is your guy!

Robert is one of the best! We just closed on our home. His signature states cooperation + communication = closing which is 100% accurate. The previous review must have mistaken him for someone else. He was right by our side during this roller coaster ride as the home purchasing process can be quite intense. Robert answers all of our questions and was there for us all hours and days of the week. He works hard to protect you and makes you feel so much at ease knowing you are in good hands. This is our second home purchase and we know a good attorney as our previous attorney and previous buyers attorneys were horrible. Highly recommend Robert. Will definitely refer him to anyone looking for a real estate attorney in NJ!

I have never felt so strongly about the level of service I received to write a review of someone, but a recent experience with Rob Berg has made it necessary for me to speak up, loudly. Having used a real estate lawyer a number of times in the past, I expected my relationship with Rob Berg to be short lived. I was soon proven very wrong. My international move proved to be very complicated, emotional, and a very long and drawn out process. I had no idea what a pivotal role he would play and how much I would depend upon his extremely high level of expertise, informed and honest advice, and clear compassion for my family and me. He went to bat for us at every turn with the bank, the seller, and other lawyers, always with our best interest at heart. He cared enough about not only my family, but the outcome as well, that I knew even if he gave me advice that was hard for me, I could trust his expertise and his integrity:. 100%, 100% of the time. Our move would not have happened without the guidance, care, integrity, and commitment. of Rob Berg He went above and beyond any expectations I might have had, and surpassed anything I could have even dreamed up. If you are looking for a lawyer to have the highest level of expertise in his field, to be a fearless and fair negotiator, and have a level of compassion and trust; the absolute best person I can recommend is Rob Berg. He was openly available to me and communicated all of my options in a clear and consistent manner throughout the whole process. I have moved a number of times, and some of those moves have been more complicated than others. Never have I felt such complete earned trust for a lawyer nor felt as if I had such an ally as Rob Berg.

I was and am impressed with Laurie's professionalism, accessibility, prudent counsel, honesty, alacrity, and compassion. When Laurie prepared my case to submit to USCIS, I had the opportunity to review the cover letter that she attached with the case, and it was so compelling and excellently put together that I believe it was one of the reasons my work authorization was approved in less than 4 weeks after the case was submitted. I am still navigating the immigration journey, but so far, I have an excellent attorney who is there with me every step of the way. I highly recommend her and her team.

Thomas is the best law attorney I have ever worked with. I really felt safe with his work. From our first meeting, he explained everything to me in terms I could easily understand and was always very responsive when I had questions outside of our meetings. If you are looking for a knowledgeable attorney at a great price, then go to Thomas.

Just Awesome!!! I had an issue with my license as it wasn't going through the registration process and I thought, it is suspended and got nervous as anyone would. After looking up few numbers and reaching through Lawyers.com, was able to connect with Mr.Verrastro who initiated the call and even after I missed his call, he picked up my call and listened to the issue with extreme patience. After listening to the problem and current situation, Mr. Verrastro took few seconds to figure out the potential problem and advised me to go to DMV and speak to them. Honestly, I wasn't expecting such a busy person allocating this much time and propose a solution as well. Five Stars ***** and a huge recommendation for anyone who needs help with legal matters. Once again, thank you Mr. Verrastro. Regards, Asad S. Hussain

What Questions Should I Ask Before Hiring a Lawyer?

Hiring the right lawyer is crucial for the success of your case. Here are some important questions to ask during your initial consultation:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. Who will be handling my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Scotch Plains, New Jersey?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
