First of all ,I never write reviews but for this I have to….IF YOU NEED AN IMMIGRATIONATTORNEY BOOK DESMOND DAWUNI NOW. DO NOT HESITATE!! YOU WILL NOT REGRET IT! With Desmond's help, I have been able to extend my permanent residency card periodically until my petition was recently approved. To tell you a little bit about my case: I met Desmond at a time when the process for my residency documentation had gone off track due to a variety of circumstances. He prioritized the maintenance of my legal status while petition was pending and ensured that I was being treated fairly. It’s been 8 long years in the process, and I cannot explain it enough how resilient he has been through the entire process. Desmond has been extremely empathetic to my personal situation and always thought ahead to ask potential issues so we could preempt and avoid them. During my interview, I was told that my case was unique and honestly the officer seemed very confused on what to do next. Before that, Desmond took the time to explain things to me, had several contingency plans and ensured I was very well-prepped for my interview, so I went there with confidence. The bonus was I had the option of having him present with me at the interview which gave me even more confidence. My case was a lot of work in many ways, and I can say with a doubt, he went above and beyond with the time he has dedicated to working with me. Finally, my petition has been approved….Yayyyy we did it!!! God really puts people in our lives for a reason and I am thankful Desmond was one of them. He is also very professional, affordable and knowledgeable in his work. I highly recommend Desmond because he will advocate for you!! Giving him 5 stars is truly an understatement. Thank you so much Desmond! You are really the best!

I've used Toya Gavin for various legal issues varying from helping with small business formation to incidents in court where I was a defendant. Toya has always proven her expertise & skill, displayed with an uncanny prowess that is needed in the court of law. For example, I was unfairly prosecuted for violating a conditional discharge for a traffic matter. Toya first reassured me of my rights, sticking to the facts to comfort me in my position as the defendant. She then used her contacts to skillfully build a solid defense in efforts to submit a motion that would be favorable in my regard. Her quick thinking and attentiveness is the reason that I was able to prove my innocence, and her defense in my honor was nothing short of impeccable. I highly recommend Toya in any matter where a truly skilled professional is needed. You won't be disappointed, but more importantly, you will be fought for in a way that let's opponent know that you mean business.

As an attorney, I probably could have written my own will, but I wanted it done properly. Her will preparation process was detailed and straightforward. The questionnaire she provided gave us a starting point for having estate planning conversations. Jaclyn raised potential issues that I didn't contemplate and had suggestions for handling them. We are happy with the our completed wills and wish we would have hired her sooner.

Jaclyn Nayar! I don't even know where to begin. She was my lifesaver during a very dark time in my life. Besides being professional and getting the job done to my satisfaction, Jackie is a kind, caring, and compassionate person. When I hired Jackie I was ready to give up. My husband left me with no warning. 3 weeks after that I tragically lost my sister. 2 months after that I was served with divorce papers. I consulted with a couple of attorneys that were just not the right person for my case. One of them had me in tears by the time we hung up from our phone consultation. I contacted him because he is a partner at the law firm my parents hired for my sister's death. He made me feel like an idiot for asking the questions I asked. He practically hung up on me. It was like this little divorce case wasn't worth the time. I decided to go through the divorce on my own without an attorney. After suffering 2 major losses, my mind was not in a good place to try to navigate the legal system. When I was at my wits end, a friend referred me to Jackie and to this day I have such gratitude for that friend. I only spoke with Jackie on the phone once and felt a big weight lifted off my shoulders. She listened to my story, was very understanding, and gave me advice. She didn't make me feel stupid for any questions I asked. She actually made me feel that I had valid questions. Needless to say, after that phone conversation I hired Jackie. She literally held my hand through the whole divorce process and made it as easy as possible for me. I've dealt with attorneys before in my life for various reasons. Jackie is the first one I've ever dealt with that is professional and good at what she does, but she also has a heart! With Jackie you don't feel like it's about the money. You will feel that she really cares and wants to help. I highly recommend her to help you with your case. I would definitely use her again if the need arises and would refer her to my own family. Jaclyn Nayar is a rare gem in the attorney world!

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of South Orange, New Jersey?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
