We hired Amy Gjelsvik to represent us after our daughter passed away on August 7, 2019 in a best interest case with regard to our granddaughter. We were the plaintiffs and our daughter's ex-husband was the defendant. She was absolutely AWESOME. We were in court numerous times, she filed all the necessary papers, she was always available for all our questions (there were so many), she is very caring, always approachable, and she knows the law!! and after 4 years, we did very well with our outcome! She always told us what would happen and with 3 different judges in this case, she said we had the best results that we could have in this regard!! We respect her advice, her knowledge of family law, and we always feel better after talking any problems over with her. We would recommend Amy to EVERYONE!! She is AWESOME!! She represents the best of the best in family law!

I used Amy for my divorce back in 2009. I would never use anyone else. She was professional, she was so nice, and she was incredible in the court room!!! If you are in need of an attorney that you can trust, and will get the best representation you would want to only use Amy!!

Amy Gjelsvik is a wonderful attorney and I am so happy to have hired her. I recommend her highly whether you are a man or woman -- she is non-biased, objective and incredibly smart. She helped me throughout my entire divorce proceedings and provided not only the excellent legal advice and documentation that I needed, but also took the time to explain it all. I felt very informed and up to date with everything. She was kind and professional at a time in my life when I was emotionally fragile and needed solid advice. Her understanding of the social dynamics that occur during such sad legal proceedings was on pointe and for that I am truly grateful. I was so impressed and pleased with how she handled my case that I used her legal services for some subsequent issues, specifically changes to my will. Look no further if you need a great lawyer!

Amy has been my lawyer for the past 16 years and this will continue for the rest of my life. She is ethical and reliable with very fast response time. One of her biggest assets is the ability to make her clients feel very comfortable in all legal matters and situations. Her method is to be very responsive, while presenting the best and most honest scenarios, enabling her clients to be well informed but also at ease. She does this with the up-most professionalism, but also with genuine compassion. She has always prioritized my daughter in her legal advice, considering the best interests of my daughter first and foremost. This has enabled my daughter to become an adult knowing she has always been in safe hands on all legal matters. I am blessed that Amy is my lawyer. Without her advice and support, I am not sure how I would have gotten through some very vulnerable and difficult situations. She has made my life better and I highly recommend her when considering a lawyer.

We recently worked with Gwen on the purchase of our new home, as well as several months prior to that on other homes that we had gotten through various stages of the home-buying process, and I cannot recommend her and her team enough. Gwen was kind, knowledgeable, professional, and went way more than above and beyond to make sure we closed on time. Gwen and Claudia were a pleasure to work with, and advocated for us every step of the way, often beyond the requirements of their roles to ensure a successful transaction. I would recommend them to anyone. Thank you, Olinski Law!!

Lou Criscuolli is an intelligent, considerate gentleman of a lawyer, with strong professional ethics and solid, thorough understanding of his field, and an extremely capable, approachable staff. If you are lucky enough to select him as your lawyer, he will protect your concerns and interests as if you were his family, as he did for us. I do not have a single criticism of the service he provided and am truly grateful for his assistance in resolving a very complex, ugly legal situation that could have been absolutely horrific and very, very expensive. Lou is of the smartest people I have ever had a conversation with, he is upfront, direct and honest. He's an absolute gem and I feel very lucky to have found his firm.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Sparta, New Jersey?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
