Tanis is an excellent family attorney. I was looking for an honest and professional attorney to apply for a guardianship to my youngest sister and when I saw her profile online I felt that she I can trust. We visited her office and had an open discussion with all details and documents. I felt more confident on my choice to her after that discussion. She filled to he her a week later and we received the family court approval a month later. Tanis is such a wonderful person with a professional and lovely character. I want to recommend Tanis to everyone who needs help with any kind of family court cases. She is the BEST.

At a time when I needed her the most, Tanis provided the most sound and professional legal council that I needed to get through a terrible divorce. I had worked with her years prior and when this matter arose, I knew without question that I wanted to work with her. And as in times past, she came through for me. Tanis was thorough and helped me to maintain my home and financial assets. Her office staff is also very personable and highly efficient and kept me well informed of dates and necessary paperwork that needed to be processed. If you have a tough legal case and want to achieve the favorable results, do not look any further...Tanis is the lawyer for you. You will not be disappointed. She is the BEST!

From the moment I called for a consult with Tanis, I felt sure she was the right attorney for me. Having been through a divorce before, I knew what I wanted and needed. She provided excellent advice, realistic expectations, and all with timely responses, a comforting demeanor, and great negotiating skills. I was extremely satisfied with my settlement and would highly recommend Tanis Deitch for anyone going through the unpleasant experience of Divorce. Tanis made it MUCH easier, is empathetic and understanding, highly experienced and works hard for her clients. Her support staff is great at getting back to you quickly, explains everything clearly, and also made the process that much easier.

Andrew and his team worked with my wife and I on the closings of both the sale of our old house and purchase of our new house - both in New Jersey. Andrew was extremely forthright, professional and responsive to all our queries. His paralegal, Mallory P., was an absolute delight to work with and she made sure we stayed abreast of all developments throughout the process. There were a few issues on the seller's side for our purchase, but Andrew was able to smoothen the process. We are very glad that we worked with Andrew and would recommend him with no reservations.

Mr Smuro is a disciplined, assertive lawyer. From our initial consultation, I was confident that Mr Smuro would present an effective legal case. He is very familiar with the local legal context which adds to his capability. His written ‘Motion’ for me was pointed, thorough, & compelling. Anything I added to the case during his preparation, he incorporated seamlessly into the final document. In fact, all of his Motion related writings effectively helped my case. From my role as the defendant, Mr Smuro was always direct, thoughtful & well-prepared. He did not over-sell my chances at the beginning, never gave false hope to the possible results, handled all results cautiously, and personally stayed focused & diligent until the resolution of the matter. I offered to write this evaluation as Mr Smuro would not request your time & effort for a matter that is not related to the case. Mr Smuro accomplished my goal in the case.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of West Long Branch, New Jersey?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
