Michael helped me get a Medical Board recommendation of denial reversed by the Board of Trustees at NYCERS and I got my Accident Disability Retirement granted.  He was extremely helpful and knowledgeable and I absolutely recommend him to any Sanitation Worker (or anyone else) seeking Accident Disability. Michael Kalmus is an attorney who has represented me multiple times. He is an extremely bright, articulate, energetic individual. He was always there for me and well prepared for all our meetings and appearances. The days and nights prior to the cases he went above and beyond the call of duty. I will never forget the confidence he instilled in me at a very trying time in my life. I can never thank him enough for his loyalty and all the extra time and effort he gave me. He is a true champion and consummate professional to all city employees and all others in all walks of life.

I am extremely grateful to have met Mr. Jeremy Klausner of Jeremy Klausner Law P.C and retain him as my attorney. As the work on my case progressed, his knowledge of law and his professional skills and ability to grasp the nuances and handle complicated situations became evident. There are differences between law firms. Mr. Jeremy Klausner has clearly demonstrated this difference with his astute judgement and actions, sound and steadfast guidance, which has led me through an adverse situation. He has always been straightforward in his dealings and has found perspectives that lead to solutions. In my particular situation, his abilities were a great asset when we were “on the frontline” where there is no time to think. This is where I valued his experience, his broad knowledge of law which was enhanced by his knowledge of accounting, and that he could use all his knowledge to take a firm stand from a clear point of view. In another incident which impressed me, is when Jeremy put my interest above his own. He clearly explained the value as well as the limits of the effectiveness of his abilities and the importance and timing of when to bring in another expert that would benefit my situation. Although this course of action adversely affected Jeremy personally, by following his selfless guidance and retaining outside expertise made a positive difference in my case. He also has a personal code, which I realized after observing the manner in which he conducted all his interactions with integrity, courtesy and consideration, and this ‘code’ was extended to all his dealings with everyone (with his clients as well as opposing counsel too). Thanks are not enough to Mr Jeremy Klausner of Jeremy Klausner Law P.C. who is an excellent, knowledgeable and wise attorney, for guiding me and representing my interests sincerely and consistently. I would be glad to recommend Jeremy Klausner Law PC to anyone seeking good legal advice and representation in any of the fields of his expertise. D Lalwani

We had some issues with undisclosed easement on our property when we bought it. We emailed to maybe 20 attorneys in the area and Jeremy was the only one who was willing to help us. Mr. Krauser was very professional and easy to deal with. He really cares about his clients and his fees were very reasonable. He did really great research about the problem and he was always right whatever he said. My wife and I are very satisfied with his service and results that he delivered. He was contacting us for any updates in the case and explaining every step of the same. We highly recommend Mr. Krauser’s service, he is a genuine attorney and you won’t regret to choose him. Thank you so much for everything Jeremy Krauser.

I sought help from Mr. Brown following a 2013 auto accident where I was rear-ended while stopped at a red light. From start to finish Mr. Brown and his staff were very helpful with the situation. Mr. Brown helped me obtain a valuable settlement for my injuries. His knowledge of personal injury law is unparalleled. He also gave me great advise on insurance options to make sure I was adequately insured. I could not have asked for a better or more professional experience from this law firm.

I have been trying to purchase real estate for about 2 yrs. After 3 failed contracts (at no fault of our own) and a whirlwind of a closing, we finally did it! As Mr. Brown would put it, my closing was a closing from "Hell's hell!" Lol. This was a Murphy's Law scenerio. It took us about a year to cross the finish line, but we did it! Literally, Mr. Brown made it happen!! He always backed me up 100%, he kept me informed with every new development (regardless of how minute) and proved to me, time and time again, that he working in my best interest. Tenacious, uncompromising, diligent, patient, and the best sense of humor! There is nothing more this 1st time homeowner could have asked for!

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of West Orange, New Jersey?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
