I could write pages on the incredibly positive experience my mom and I had with Brian Egolf, Heather Tanner, and the staff at Egolf+Ferlic+Martinez+Harwood law firm. I reached out to them in the most devastating moment in our life when my mom and I lost my brother, Patrick, due to what we believed was because of the negligent care he received by two medical facilities. Brian immediately set up a call to gather information and moved forward with filing a wrongful death case. Over the course of the next two years, we worked with Brian and Heather through an emotionally difficult journey of grieving the loss of our favorite person in the world, while trying to find justice for him. Not only were they impeccable and diligent in working the case for us and Patrick, but they helped us heal with their consistent compassion, empathy, and kindness. They worked the case like it was for their own family member bringing their heart to the case. They put in an incredible amount of time and energy, and they hired a top-notch medical expert. We will be forever grateful and highly recommend them for any legal circumstances a person may be facing.

Heather Tanner gave not only legal, but also emotional and moral support during my extended divorce process, and I will be forever grateful to her and her team. Heather is very professional, intelligent, strong, gracious, and compassionate. She and her team were always available when I had questions or needed help, and did their level best to move a stalled process along. I trust her implicitly and highly recommend her services.

From the get-go, working with Egolf + Ferlic + Martinez + Harwood LLC felt like hitting the jackpot in the legal world. Brian Egolf, Kate Ferlic, and Mark Cox, along with their rockstar team, redefine what it means to be professional and caring in this industry. Our case wasn’t just about the legal nitty-gritty; it was about navigating through some seriously tough emotional terrain. And let me tell you, this incredible team didn’t just show up with legal know-how; they came armed with empathy and understanding, making the whole process feel a bit less like a legal battle and more like a journey with supportive friends. I simply can't praise Brian, Kate, and Mark enough. Their knowledge and easygoing nature were like a guiding light, leading us through every twist and turn of our case. Their clear explanations didn't just educate us; they empowered us to make decisions we never thought we'd be capable of. And let's not forget the incredible squad behind the scenes—Becky and the rest of their remarkable staff—who were more than just legal support; they were our guardian angels, our cheerleaders, always there with a friendly voice and a reassuring presence when we needed it most. Egolf + Ferlic + Martinez + Harwood LLC didn’t just have our backs; they went all out, fighting relentlessly to make sure we felt heard, understood, and supported every step of the way. Their dedication wasn't just about winning a case; it was about empowering us, making us feel safe and valued in their capable hands. In a world where legal battles can often feel cold and impersonal, Egolf + Ferlic + Martinez + Harwood LLC brought back the warmth and humanity that's so often lacking. They weren’t just our legal team; they were our champions, our advocates, and our lifelines throughout the process. To all my fellow New Mexicans out there navigating the complexities of the legal world, take it from me: Egolf + Ferlic + Martinez + Harwood LLC isn't just a law firm; they're the ultimate support system you need when life throws you a curveball. A heartfelt thank you to Egolf + Ferlic + Martinez + Harwood LLC for being the unwavering heroes in our legal saga. Your dedication, expertise, and compassion have not only won us the best outcome for our case but also— they truly won mine and my family’s hearts. We couldn't have asked for a better team to stand by us through thick and thin. From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for your exceptional service and for making a profound difference in our lives. You all are true gems in the legal profession, and we are forever grateful. Keep shining bright!

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Santa Fe, New Mexico?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
