Divorce and custody issues are never easy, but the staff at Colwell are amazing and made me feel comfortable and put my mind at ease. My initial contact was with Lauren. She was professional and made me feel like family. I would recommend Cowell Law Group to anyone beginning the Family Court process.

i’d be giving negative stars if i could. this law firm is the absolute worst and put me in an awful situation. what a HUGE mistake. once retained, they switched me to a “senior attorney” who obviously can bill at a higher rate. they were paid $35,000 in a month and a half, and accrued an additional $20,000 for that time. when i couldn’t come up with more they just stopped doing anything, and completely abandoned me at the start of my divorce trial. i was able to scrape by and pay them, but even that didn’t finish the trial. i was forced into a settlement agreement with my attorney stressing how much more two more days of trial would cost. two weeks after, i discover that i agreed to things that did not exist, and this law firm did nothing except ask for more money. they do not care about their clients. when you have a balance, they won’t allow you to speak to your attorney only billing and the “managing attorney”. they do this very strategically, when you are desperately needing information. so if you needed questions answered about your case before you sink in another $20,000, you’re out of luck. they expect you to come up with thousands in short notice in order for them to continue to help you. they wait until you’re at a crucial point in your litigation and all of the sudden you find your retainer used up and a demand for another $20,000 for them to continue with the case. i would run far far away from this law firm unless you want them to handle your bankruptcy, lose your kids, and own your house too.

I had a ny case but am based in California- had too many points in my license & dui w/ certificate of release- which ny state issued but refused to honor- without exaggeration it took 3 years to get a copy of a piece of paper I already had… because of a 60 day issuance rule it voided my 2009 certificate- a new stamped certificate copy from the court wasn’t accepted- the date had to be in the box instead of a cover sheet even though it was authentic -one would need a Time Machine to accomplish it. But Jonathan helped with the point reduction and reissued certificate-for over 3 years but I have my CA license due to his diligence and hard work. I wish I had him as counsel for my original conviction… I would definitely advise a consult with him - even if you already have representation. Best choice out there.

In 2017 I was charged with Aggravated DWI in Albany County. It was my 4th since 1997. It would be my 3rd in NY, plus one out of state. I was caught dead to rights. I have a CDL from another state which I reside in, and my job is dependent on me having it. NY has a 3 DWI’s in 25 years, and you lose your license for life. Theres a 2 “serious” traffic offenses with a CDL no matter the state, you lose it for life. Needless to say the emotions/scenarios running thru my head were awful. I was thinking about the future, and the fact I wasn’t going to have one anymore.
I ran across Johnathans firm on AVVO. He didn’t have many reviews at the time, but they were all excellent. People spoke highly of him as a person, and his ability to deliver great results. We met the next day, which was Easter Sunday. I explained what happened, told him about my past, and the need for my CDL for work. Johnathan didn’t judge my past. He was well spoken, driven, polite, upfront and very confident. He said he couldn’t guarantee me anything, but that he would do his best to help me out. His honesty, personality, and meeting me on Easter without hesitation, is why I hired him on the spot. I felt he truly cared, and if anyone could help me, it would be him.
We came up with a plan to move forward and eventually have a trial. I wasn’t interested in taking a plea, because I couldn’t lose my CDL, it scared me more than going to jail. We decided to ride it out. I was able to keep working in the meantime.
At arraignment I plead not guilty, and forfeited my NYS driving privileges upon conviction. I was able to go home with my home states license valid. Johnathan was able to get it so I didn’t have to come to NY again for my court dates, except one, where Johnathan questioned the arresting officer. I’d listen closely, and watch him work. Johnathan was clearly well respected within the court house. He is calculated, intelligent, and a master at his craft. I was confident in his ability’s, and his all around DWI knowledge. I knew he would represent me well come trial, but that I had given him nothing to work with.
Johnathan is quick to return calls, texts, and emails. He was reassuring every time we spoke, and was generally concerned on how I was doing. Johnathan gave me plenty of notice If I needed to come to Albany, so that I could make arrangements to get there.
At some point maybe a year or so in, I was offered a plea deal. “DWI, with no probation or jail”. It’s a pretty good deal that I was appreciative of, but I could not accept it. I couldn’t lose my CDL for life.
Little did I know “riding it out” would last over 5 1/2 years. With Johnathan doing what he does, a lil help from COVID, and the courts being shut down this thing was on hold. There was no jury trails being held, and this was all good news for me. I was mentally a disaster, but I was driving, not in jail, and still working. I was saving up for what I thought would be my new life as a bum, after I was undoubtedly going to be found guilty, and eventually lose everything. One of the few things that kept me sane when feeling hopeless, was reading Johnathans reviews over, and over. There were many more added over the years, praising his work in the court room, and for the plea bargains he was able to achieve for people.
A few weeks ago I heard from Johnathan. They negotiated a new deal which I couldn’t believe, and gladly accepted. A miracle thru my eyes, and those few people I’ve told about my situation.
NO DWI… (Reckless Endangerment, a breathalyzer in my vehicle, and the standard DWI requirement classes etc). I kept my license, career, and have my NY driving privilege back. Johnathan even sent me the info I needed to sign up for the court mandates.
I can’t thank Johnathan enough for what he did for me. You’re an amazing person, and I am forever grateful to you.
