When I found out my nephew had been locked up on federal charges stemming from a heinous alleged felony and that prosecutors were seeking twenty years for an act we know he did not commit I called Matt Hunter. Within hours my nephew was out on bail. After 6 long months of preparing for trial Matt had all the charges dropped. They get a teeny bit of leeway because a good percentage of the time they are appointed by the court to defendants who can't afford an attorney so I get they must have HUGE caseloads but my husband was completely screwed over by these "defenders" within 3 months on Rikers Island he went through 4 different attorneys each time having to start over from scratch explaining what happened with his case. I wrote a supervising attorney and my sister called a supervising attorney and finally she called CEO Lori Zeno of behalf of my husband because everytime he had a courtdate he would sit in a holding cell all day long with a different attorney coming down to see him for 5 minutes and that is it. When you are sitting in Rikers Island(and no he was not in there for any violet crime at all) every day feels like a month. In 90 days he has ONE video visit with his original attorney , Jennifer Bacon and she is the absolute WORST. Finally at his most recent court date after another unfamiliar attorney came to speak with him, he fired him and the judge took one look at the history of having a different attorney from Queens defenders and the judge agreed with him and assigned him a specific attorney from a firm that was not Queens defenders. My husband didn't even have to make a case to the judge for a new attorney, the judge took one look at the paperwork and granted my husbands wish. THANK GOODNESS someone listened to him because all the letters sent and phone calls made to Queens defenders fell on deaf ears!
