I spoke with Mr. LeJune about a possible copyright claim against a movie studio that paralleled my book, and he graciously took the time to walk me through the steps I would need to submit to prove my case and get an attorney's interest. Very knowledgeable, very organized and very helpful.

Joel was an excellent advocate. He was extremely knowledgeable and companionate about my situation. My family and I are very grateful that lawyers like him exist. He was affordable and delivered exactly what he said he would. He was very effective and communicated the process well without being overbearing. I can’t recommend Joel’s services enough. If you need a defense attorney for any reason whatsoever don’t hesitate to give Joel a call!

If you're looking for a great lawyer you are in luck because you've found one of the best! I was in a complicated criminal legal battle facing multiple serious charges. Joel and his team worked diligently to research everything about me, the people accusing me, and all the facts and strategies he would employ in my case and to help my personal image. He can prepare to be argumentative and hostile to opposing counsel but also has the ability to flip that switch and become a civil and empathetic lawyer when needed. His years of experience is proof of his legal knowledge, attention to detail, and research skills. He also has many relationships with other lawyers and DA's in NC making him one of the best and most connected lawyers in the area. Subsequently he can advise you and your case in countless different areas. As soon as I met Joel I was very impressed by his legal knowledge and ability to listen and analyze. I would describe it as being able to listen to clients, the opposing counsel, witnesses, and the court and most importantly being about to process all of that information fast and turn over concise results. If ever have criminal charges brought against you I highly recommend Joel and his team, I can confidently say they will defend you to the best of their abilities based on the facts of your case.

I'm likely one of the pickiest people out there due to past experience handling parental issues with lawyers in other states. 90% of the time, I had to correct mistakes from lawyers with an excellent reputation to lawyers who too late appeared to be missing some brain cells. This was through about four lawyers I hired and fired. When we moved to Asheville, we searched unsuccessfully for a Trust lawyer some years ago. We gave up until we got a recommendation this year. Our work needed to be done and lawyers tend to make me nervous due to their inadequacies in past encounters. When we met with Ms. Burt, I tried to trip her on her knowledge (as we did with another lawyer we interviewed and knew we wouldn't go to her as her knowledge was very limited). I was unable to find errors in Ms. Burt's documents. She's extremely knowledgeable, professional, and personable. I've already recommended her to friends and I do not take recommending lawyers lightly.

Planned a strategic approach, accurately predicted results, case dismissed with good cause; in the end (a year-long battle), even recommended for dismissal by the DA. Tuorto is clearly respected, he dominates the room when he enters, and radiates a calm confidence in both poise & speech. Shows genuine concern for the client, proper informative support, prompt & courteous service across the board. Very professional in all aspects. Tuorto truly knows the system from the inside out (see his work history & other reviews).

Attorney Anthoney exceeded my expectations as a lawyer. In fact, he managed to get all of my charges dismissed at court. I could not be more happier with the outcome. He is very personable and makes sure all your concerns and questions are addressed. He made this process go as smoothly as possible, and I was assured he would do a job well done. His assistant, Madelyn, is extremely helpful, caring, and friendly. She was always on top of things and was very organized. I cannot thank Turoto Law enough. I would definitely recommend them to anyone!

Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. Who will be handling my case?

  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Asheville, North Carolina?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
