Nick White is an excellent attorney and great at thinking on his feet in court. He can adapt to the situation as needed in a seconds time and doesnt get flustered. We had a tough case and a tough judge. Other circumstances happened that might have thrown any attorney off their game but he kept his eye on the ball and made quick changes to enhance and perfect his strategy as needed at a seconds notice! Very pleased with his performance (and I am not easily impressed. In fact I can be a fussy little B...), but this guy is a true asset to this law firm!

Although they didn't take my case, the lawyer Nick White gave me a lot of insight about my current situation and how I can possibly handle things from this point. He also refunded me my consultation fee since he couldn't take my case! That alone told me that he wasn't in it just for money and actually cares about both potential clients and actual clients he takes on!

I cannot express enough gratitude for the exceptional service I received from King Law during one of the most challenging times in my life. My divorce was a high-conflict case, and I was incredibly fortunate to have the expertise of attorneys Patrick Bryan and Jacob Martin on my side. From the very beginning, they approached my situation with the utmost professionalism, compassion, and attention to detail. Patrick Bryan and Jacob Martin were not just lawyers—they were fierce advocates for my rights and well-being. They navigated the complexities of my case with skill and provided clear, practical advice at every turn. Their ability to anticipate challenges and respond with strategic solutions made all the difference in reaching a favorable outcome. I also want to give a special shout-out to Chloe, the paralegal who was an absolute rock throughout the entire process. Chloe was always available to answer my questions, keep me informed, and offer support when things felt overwhelming. Her dedication and efficiency ensured that everything ran smoothly, and I felt well-cared for every step of the way. If you're facing a difficult divorce or any legal issue, I highly recommend King Law. The team, especially Patrick, Jacob, and Chloe, went above and beyond to provide me with the best possible representation. Their commitment to their clients and their craft is truly unparalleled. Thank you for everything!

I have been affiliated with The McKinney Law Group both personally and professionally for a number of years now. Damien is tough when it comes to the cases he handles, all while maintaining ultimate professionalism and a pleasant demeanor that makes him wonderful to work with. An expert in both FL and NC laws, he steps up to bat for his clients and always aims to achieve the best possible results for them.

I hired James Mills to represent my case for a DWI refusal to blow. I was in a severe car accident and was unable to comply due to my injuries. However, I did refuse medical help so I was arrested and taken to jail. I spoke with James within a few days of my arrest and he said we had a strong case but he would not guarantee my outcome. He understood the law well and informed me of what my options were. Because my case was in a county outside of where he primarily works I did have to sit in court 6 times due to continuances because he was unable to make the appearance. With that being said, we met before my trial in his office and I felt prepared and confident with him as my attorney. The day of my trial, the arresting trooper made several untrue allegations and James was still able to keep the trial on track. He was Thorough and I was found not guilty by the judge. I am very confident that James is a great attorney and will get the job done. My only recommendation if you hire him is to not expect him to hold your hand. I didn't hear from him much and this being my first time in court, made me nervous because I wasn't sure how the court system worked and what to expect. He did what he was hired to do and he was very kind and very affordable. I would highly recommend him.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Asheville, North Carolina?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
