Pros
1
Excellent and professional legal services
“Melody combined knowledge and expertise with warmth and empathy. That was very reassuring to me as a first time client, and I expect to have her review and update my trust next.”
2
Thorough and attentive to client needs
“I hired Melody King to help me with my separation agreement with my husband. It needed to be done quickly as I was re-financing our house and buying him out, and there were a lot of details to make sure were taken care of. Melody was wonderful. She was very thorough and attentive to my needs, during a very trying time.”
3
Successful legal outcomes for clients
“After knowing nothing about my case and custody trial, she took it over with the utmost professional qualities I have seen. In a short period of time, Melody presented my case to the court in the way I needed to give me the desired outcome that I had been pushing toward for over two years.”
Cons
1
Slow responsiveness and communication issues
“The Kania Law Firm is very slow to return phone calls. Many of the transactions are time sensitive but they are slow to update their website and commicate with people. They need a manager that will teach some customer service skills training.”
2
Dissatisfaction with legal services and outcomes
“BT Atkinson will not have your best interest and shouldn't be relied upon for any important documents that may be time sensitive. It has cost our company a great deal and we fully regret choosing BT.”
3
Questionable billing and fee practices
“Losing your home is a horrible experience and this law firm doesn't give damn about you or your circumstances. You're doing everything to come up with the money and this law firm's fees is what will get you because they add more whenever they feel like it and whatever amount they feel like.”

THEIVES! We used them to handle a workers comp case and they tried to steal over $5000 by sneaking behind our backs and lied in writing! We only found out when one of them let it slip discussing that they received their check weeks prior and we have been ignored and left in the cold for months trying to get paid, even after signing papers and settling! Do not trust these people (Greensboro Office) Cannot believe after they get $20,000+ they have the nerve and greed to attempt stealing another $5,000 illegally.

Losing your home is a horrible experience and this law firm doesn't give damn about you or your circumstances. You're doing everything to come up with the money and this law firm's fees is what will get you because they add more whenever they feel like it and whatever amount they feel like. I called and told them that I'd finally come up with all of the money and two days later they added 6,000 with only a few days for me to come up with money or lose my house. I literally collasped and I hope to never have to deal with them again.

They helped me through legal aid, and I am very thankful that they gave their time and support to the community. Not a lot of attorneys would do that. I know this as I have worked closely with them.

We worked with BT Atkinson on some fairly simple Limited Partnership documents and it was a complete disaster. He was quick to send us a retainer invoice and then we didn't hear from him for months. He not only missed our project deadline, but it has been nearly 5 months since he was supposed to have our deliverable and we received nothing. We finally heard from him once we asked for a refund. The one document he prepared for us was clearly rushed and he didn't even get the state of registration correct (amongst other obvious errors that he completely missed). BT Atkinson will not have your best interest and shouldn't be relied upon for any important documents that may be time sensitive. It has cost our company a great deal and we fully regret choosing BT.

I had a wonderful opportunity to consult with Mr. McKinney. His professionalism, expertise, and composed approach was impressive and assuring. He was highly knowledgeable of the law, explaining legal matters using concrete examples, and making challenging concepts easy to understand. He was also quite patient and empathetic. If you're looking for an attorney who is well-informed and understanding, Mr. McKinney is a great choice.

I have been affiliated with The McKinney Law Group both personally and professionally for a number of years now. Damien is tough when it comes to the cases he handles, all while maintaining ultimate professionalism and a pleasant demeanor that makes him wonderful to work with. An expert in both FL and NC laws, he steps up to bat for his clients and always aims to achieve the best possible results for them.

I hired James Mills to represent my case for a DWI refusal to blow. I was in a severe car accident and was unable to comply due to my injuries. However, I did refuse medical help so I was arrested and taken to jail. I spoke with James within a few days of my arrest and he said we had a strong case but he would not guarantee my outcome. He understood the law well and informed me of what my options were. Because my case was in a county outside of where he primarily works I did have to sit in court 6 times due to continuances because he was unable to make the appearance. With that being said, we met before my trial in his office and I felt prepared and confident with him as my attorney. The day of my trial, the arresting trooper made several untrue allegations and James was still able to keep the trial on track. He was Thorough and I was found not guilty by the judge. I am very confident that James is a great attorney and will get the job done. My only recommendation if you hire him is to not expect him to hold your hand. I didn't hear from him much and this being my first time in court, made me nervous because I wasn't sure how the court system worked and what to expect. He did what he was hired to do and he was very kind and very affordable. I would highly recommend him.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Asheville, North Carolina?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
