Kellie assisted us with our estate planning, and she was great! It was our first time, and she made the process very easy to understand. She walked us through each step of the process in detail and answered all of our questions (and we had a lot!). She is so easy to work with and we highly recommend her firm for your estate planning needs!

We contacted Carolina Family Estate Planning after moving to North Carolina from New Jersey - we wanted to make sure all our important documents, including wills, healthcare directives and trust documents were all up to date and compliant with our new state laws. They responded to us immediately, and through several meetings including the most important one with Kellie, we had our (pretty complex!) documents updated and ready for signature within a matter of days. She answered every question clearly and kindly - this kind of thing can be stressful but they she and her team went above and beyond to make us feel secure and at ease. Their office is absolutely the most organized lawyer's offices we have ever been to, right down to the document delivery which came in a tabbed binder and with copies on a flash drive. I can't say enough good things about our experience, and we feel like our family is in expert and caring hands.

We've had our estate plan revised twice by specialist firms. Thus, we have experience working with estate lawyers and can compare them. We found Kellie Corbett to be both an excellent listener and communicator. She suggested alternatives that have greatly improved our plan. In addition, Kellie is also generous with her time and has great patience. In summary, we consider her to be the most effective such lawyer with whom we've had the pleasure of working.

We were lucky enough to have Kellie work with us on our Estate Plan at Carolina Family Estate Planning. She spent time getting to know us, listened to our specific circumstances, wants, and needs, and then worked to create a collaborative plan that reflected that. We especially appreciated Kellie's skill at explaining things and how they apply to our own situation; she's a gifted educator. We were also truly impressed with her communication skills; we never felt like we were unable to get the answers we needed. We feel comfortable with our plan and know we are supported moving forward. We highly recommend her to anyone seeking assistance!

Daniel worked on our not-so-easy non-provisional software patent. He dove in and immersed himself in our claims section. He was creative in offering ways to improve our spec and comprehensive in suggesting ways to make our already robust provisional patent even stronger in the non-provisional phase. Consider yourself fortunate if you have Daniel working on your project.

Mr.Bunn and his assistant JoAnne worked with me throughout this difficult journey. I had no understanding of how worker’s comp. cases could be so confusing and and intimidating and I knew after attempting to manage this on my own that I needed an attorney with expertise in this area. After consulting with others that had suffered injuries and used this firm I reached out to Mr.Bunn. He guided me through every step and knew exactly what was right and what was wrong. He contacted me by phone and emails weekly and I never had to wonder ifI had made the right decision. I would highly recommend this attorney for any Workman’s Comp. Injury.

I have attended many closings over the years. Each customers’ experience varies greatly, depending upon several factors. The attorney and the office handling the process are instrumental in this process. Simply said, Matt and Christina excelled in handling my clients’ real estate transactions. The clients complemented me for this excellence in service from Matt and Christina. I give all of the credit right back to them. The team is dependable, efficient, and customer focused - while providing great communication throughout the process. I highly recommend The Law Office of Matthew McCrystal for all of your real estate transaction needs! There are many reasons why I would call him my preferred attorney of choice.

  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Cary, North Carolina?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
