I'll try to keep this short and sweet and to the point. I hired Mr. Ames last year for something that wasn't extremely serious but could have landed me behind bars and was also something that could have potentially disrupted my business and/or the future of it had things not been settled. Long story short, Mr. Ames not only made that happen but there was almost no effort on my part. Save for having to make a trip to the DMV one time but that one trip and $100 fee I paid for this case to be dismissed was something that without a smooth efficient attorney, I probably would still be worrying about it or getting hit with bureaucracy from The DMV and possibly law enforcement. It was just an error of judgment on my part and on the buyers part so essentially a small misunderstanding led to a cop (investigator in Charlotte) and DMV employee contacting me and asking a bunch of questions and he had enough to nail me for this crime (I'm not a bad person, this was just something that I failed to take care of in regards to a title notary). I'm not from North Carolina so I really didn't have much experience or knowledge with NC titles and in South Carolina, titles do not have to be notarized. And in fact you couldn't even if you wanted to because there's not a place on there for a notary stamp etc. Anyway, at first I panicked but then realized that there were many options available in the area I resided in at the time off Central Avenue. I'm not exactly sure why I ended up going with S&F but I think it was just the closest criminal attorney as Charlotte traffic is a nightmare in that area. But what unequivocally sealed the deal was the fact that when I talked to Ryan it was as if he was some sort of a magician and pretty much told me exactly what was going to happen as if he had already done this many times over and this is no BS review and is not contrived - this is REAL. Everything that Ryan told me would/would not probably happen turned out to be correct. I went from being scared to reply to this cops emails and phone calls to talking to him like an old pal after Ryan made one 5 minute phone call. What I'm saying is I've never seen someone make it look so easy and maybe it was because it comes naturally for him. He's a good lawyer but he doesn't overthink things or blab on and on. The office was neat, clean, relatively upscale and definitely inviting. I never had to go to any sort of court dates nor was I arrested or anything. Ryan worked it out to where I just paid a fine and it was essentially dismissed and it was due to Mr Ames. I was also given the option to just pay a flat fee up front for his services and he guaranteed me that one of time fee would be for the most part all he would need to get the charge taken care of out of court.....which was a small price to pay for my freedom and peace of mind etc). He could have billed me hourly at hundreds of dollars an hour. Like a lot of lawyers do but he didn't. And although this was not a murder charge or anything super serious but - it definitely was the smoothest criminal court matter I've ever experienced due to Siefer & Flatow's dedication. While I cannot speak for his court presence, I will say that if you decide to speak with Mr. Ames, don't let his quiet,/shy demeanor fool you..... He's not a big talker and he's definitely young still and I'll be honest, I did have some reservations in the back of my mind initially because I was used to these "EXTRA" type family attorneys that would sell me a dream so they could block bill me and rack up the fees. Remember, not every lawyer cares about the outcome of your case I was still actively fighting a nasty custody battle via family court in SC at the time & honestly had already had grievances, distrust and even disdain for lawyers by this point and the case wasn't over with. I lost that case. It was a nightmare. But Ryan was a breath of fresh air & truly cared about the outcome! He's the real deal. Call him...you'll see!

Josh is a native Charlotte man who knows the area and people well. He understood my case well and helped me even though I was not the most rich or fancy client. Josh knows people and it makes him a good lawyer. He is honest, and I do not get a feel like he is trying to make money, but help me. His office is a little outdated and he is old fashioned (uses a fax machine) but he is more experienced and knows the law better than many recent graduates at big firm. I recommend him to anyone in need of a down to earth criminal attorney.

Mr. Kirkley handled my personal injury case. He was very professional and got me results that were beyond my expectations. The entire staff is polite and courteous. They were quick to return my calls and answer all my questions. I would highly recommend Kirkley & Stanley Law Offices to anyone who has an accident. I have referred friends and family to their firm for accidents and traffic related matters.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Charlotte, North Carolina?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
