I met Ms. DeCosta the day before going into Superior Court after being tied up in a civil suite for more than three years. I was in the courtroom viewing cases trying to get myself prepared for my case the following day. I was impressed with Ms. DeCost's elegant courtroom presence. After winning the child custody case she exited the courtroom with her client and the family. I was just as impressed with the interaction and affection between all of them it compelled me to approach her after her clients said goodbye. Just as I had assumed she was very approachable. She gave me a welcoming smile as I introduced myself while shaking her hand and congratulating her on the fine work I had just witnessed. She seemed eager to hear about my case as she listened attentively. She asked me several questions. She spoke to me as if she had known me for awhile. I felt very relaxed speaking to her and that was surprising to me because I don't normally open up to folks when I first meet them. She gave me some very good legal advice as we walked out of the courthouse. She asked me to call her and let her know the outcome of my case. After more than three years fighting I entered the courtroom once more the following day. I am pleased to say my case got dismissed. Well, I will definitely keep her number in my phone if I ever need an attorney. I would recommend you call her if you need her services and judge for yourself. Attorney DeCosta treats you like family! Attorney DeCosta jumped right on my case with very little time to prepare for trial. She is very professional and importantly has a hands on approach. She communicates well and kept me up to speed in a timely manner on information regarding my case. In fact, she has been accessible to answer any of my sudden questions via text, phone, and/ or email on a frequent basis. Attorney DeCosta took pride in answering my questions after business hours, and even after the hearing was over without billing for every question and response! I am very thankful for her!

Excellence and Experience. Valerie is a colleague that I have worked with for many years either as opposing counsel or beside me in the courtroom. She is the one person I trust with my clients. Valerie is compassionate and truly cares for her clients needs. She is a gem in this profession.

Deplorable. I had little other choice but to fire Valerie Hein as my attorney in a custody case. I am beyond disappointed and appalled in the quality of care she displayed regarding my custody case. I had asked her questions multiple times with no answers and she never followed through (unless further prompted by me about the status) on what she said she would do from setting court dates to sending me information. I have documented all of this (easily done based on emails she sent) and will be filing a complaint with the state bar. I brought up my concerns with her "work" twice and her response was that I misunderstood or that she could understand why I was frustrated with how long it was taking but Valerie didn't admit fault. There was even a moment when she said the court date is...but that day came and went and nothing from Valerie. When I asked about it 4 days after to find out what happened she said that there was a misunderstanding of what needed to be done and that she would set it for a different date. Maybe she doesn't read her emails or she is overloaded by clients and can't pay attention to what she needs to do (recently hired paralegals which means they know they are too busy to do all the work on their own). Without divulging details of my custody situation, Valerie Hein was not only inconsiderate to me as a client to not be informed but it is inconsiderate to the witnesses I have asked to appear in court on my behalf as well as the other party. I was not the only person affected by Valerie's lack of communication and follow through. As a professional I would be appalled to treat any client in such a manner that is disrespectful of the time and money they have spent as well as the significance of having a lawyer in protecting what is most important, which is my child. I would not recommend Valerie to anyone since ethically she was comfortable lying to me, charging me for services not rendered/completed and her general lack of quality or dedication to her clients. Even now I am waiting on documents to be sent to me that she stated I would have by Wednesday. Overall, abysmal. Update 6/4/18. I went through the paperwork returned to me and come to find out Valerie omitted sending me information that was pertinent for me to know. By failing to provide me this information when she received it at the end of February it gave her an excuse to delay the court case. Deplorable.
