After my ex took my children and left the state, a friend recommended Passenant & Shearin Law. When I called the firm, I spoke with Ashley and she was able to meet with me later that afternoon. She was so helpful, friendly, and reassuring in my time of need. I hired the firm and she drafted documents that day so I could regain custody of my kids. Having her in my corner was such a blessing.

If you are looking for an attorney that is very approachable, caring and listens to your needs. Then you have come to the right place. Stephen Allinger works with the David Self Law, PLLC. I came in for consultation about separation and divorce. They explained how their office works and what is involved when retaining an attorney. Stephen listened to my story and understood what I was going through. He asked questions that would pertain to my situation as well as what next steps were and he was either an email or phone call away. I was so comfortable with the consultation I retained them before leaving. It was easy to set up appointments on line when I needed as well. The best part is of the process I was able to complete what I wanted to do very quickly. Stephen is a great family attorney I would highly recommend!! You do not need to look anywhere else!

In working with Ms. Collier for my bankruptcy, I was very please with the level of service she provided me. I walked into her office unsure and afraid of what I was about to do. Christina took me on and spent a lot of time explaining things to me and making the process less intimidating. I would recommend her for ANY financial or real estate needs you have. She is very professional and kind.

In a million years I would not have imagined I would have ended up in such a difficult and emotionally draining divorce proceeding, but I did. Christine was referred to me by a friend. She was patient yet direct with me. She was kind but firm. I trusted her, because she genuinely had my best interests at heart. She was clear about what she would and would not do for me. The opposing Attorney was ruthless. and rattled me at times. She kept me focused, accountable and on track. Only by the grace of God did our disaster end well and our marriage was restored. Once she was sure I was of sound mind she was genuinely happy for us, even though she knew the details of our messy situation. My husband's Attorney did not take it as well, he was in it from what I experienced for the "thrill of the hunt." Christine was seeking the best outcome possible for me and always presented the highest levels of honesty and integrity every time I worked with her. Christine is a "Best in Class" Attorney and an Incredible Woman whom I respect immensely. I recommend her services without reservation.

Ms. Collier was extremely knowledgeable and helpful. She guided me during an extremely stressful time in my life without being judgmental or condescending. She helped me understand the Chapter 7 process in common sense terms but did not speak down to me. She provided quality service at a very reasonable price.

Dustin is easy to work with, very responsive to emails and calls any time of day, and he gets the job done. He is succinct in his work and answered all of my questions during the legal process. I worked with him during a very difficult time, and he was very matter of fact, to the point, and provided guidance to me on legal matters I was unfamiliar with. I would recommend working with him.

  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Cornelius, North Carolina?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
