I am a real estate professional who retained Jason Campbell with great success to handle a significant DOT taking in the past affecting my business. He looked past what was happening on that property to see how the taking from the larger shopping center would affect my building. I called him to discuss a current condemnation issue and he gave me clear and succinct advice. I would recommend him highly.

This law firm provided the assistance and encouragement I needed and I am so happy I made the call. Thanks to Tom Quigley and co-workers for putting my mind at ease. The genuine concern and care is superior. I would definitely recommend to anyone.

Pros
1
Knowledgeable and experienced attorneys who understand eminent domain law and can negotiate favorable settlements
“Jason Campbell came well recommended. While he couldn't take my case, he clearly understood the problems I was having and pointed me towards a solution. It was clear from our conversation that understood the law and understood the problem I was having.”
2
Responsive and attentive staff who keep clients informed throughout the process
“They kept me updated during the entire process. I trust that they will help us get the best offer possible.”
3
Successful in obtaining higher compensation for clients than the initial offers from government agencies
“Kevin & Jason worked together and ended up settling my case for more than 5 times the amount that the NCDOT initially agreed to pay.”
4
Provide valuable guidance and advice, even for cases they do not directly represent
“Although my property did not fall into a category that this firm would represent, they did give me some sound advice on accepting the NCDOT's offer for my property.”
5
Committed to achieving the best possible outcome for their clients
“They made us feel like family! I can't say enough wonderful things about them. There's quite a large amount of stress and emotion involved when your property is being purchased by the state. NCED not only helped explain what happens and when, but eased the stress and uncertainty during the process.”
Cons
1
Lack of communication and updates from the firm after the initial engagement
“Do not use. They just mail out packets to everybody involved in a DOT project and treat you like just another case number. There is no communication from them after you sign the dotted line for them to represent you.”
2
Inconsistent quality of service, with some clients reporting excellent experiences and others dissatisfied
“Get experience with this firm.”

We hired Sonya to review and update our estate documents. We already had an existing plan, but it was drawn up in another state and we had since had several more children. She reviewed our existing plan and made some very insightful recommendations. It was very clear very quickly that she is very well versed in all aspects of estate law. She is very kind and fun to work with as well. I would highly recommend her to anyone looking to develop or update their estate plan.

My husband and I were in search of a lawyer to help us with estate planning and were very lucky to have found Sonya. She was extremely personable and very thorough during our consultation. Throughout the process, she was always quick to respond to any questions we had and made the task of preparing our estate less daunting. I would recommend Sonya to anyone looking for a good, affordable lawyer to provide them with estate planning help.

Jack Rockers was a godsend. My husband and I initially contacted two other attorneys to help us navigate the process involved in changing my husband’s immigration status from TN to green card, and we were feeling demoralized by our experiences. The first attorney was nonresponsive; the second was ill informed and exploitative. Soon after we had consulted the second attorney, an acquaintance of mine recommended Jack. He was the perfect fit for us: friendly and accessible, professional and easygoing. His fee was reasonable, and being able to rely on him in helping us prepare and submit our application eased the stress and sense of uncertainty that my husband and I were feeling. We placed our trust in Jack, and he did not disappoint. Our initial meeting with him was on May 22, our application was finalized and mailed by June 12, and my husband was granted his green card on September 10. With each development along the way, the support staff at Hatch Law Office kept in prompt and constant touch. Moreover, Jack was honest with me when I asked if he thought my husband and I needed him to accompany us to our interview at the local USCIS office. He said that because our case was straightforward and we were so well organized and informed, he did not believe we needed to spend the extra money to have him accompany us. And he was right. I appreciate Jack’s integrity, and I strongly recommend him as an immigration attorney.

Great help on my H1B case. As far as me, he only asked necessary questions so I have time focusing on my job. I believe my major is not what he usually works on but it still worked. He has been helpful by responding my Email on time.

  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Durham, North Carolina?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
