Was consulting with them about a matter I was wronged in. And was continually cut off and brushed off. They don't work they don't listen! As I'm now seeing this is the same complaint in many other reviews. I was just yelled at by an attorney because I was asking questions. Find another law firm! Trust me I've dealt with many attorneys this is not the one you want to do business with. Have tried to work with multiple lawyers in this firm. They all give the same nonchalant vibe!

I was given info on LegalShield through a representative who came to my job. I signed up and had a matter that I needed legal assistance with. I called and spoke with an attorney who was extremely unprofessional, he kept cutting across me, jumped to conclusions and offered me no options to help resolve the matter, stated that the representative who spoke to the employees lied and gave misinformation, was NOT empathetic to my situation, very cold and lacked decorum. I called back to report it to a customer service representative and she never apologized for my bad experience or encounter, she too was non empathetic. This law firm has individuals who lack social and emotional awareness for people who call and are just trying to get some direction and insight. And even if you can't help, it's a way to do and say things. From the other reviews I'm seeing, I'm not shocked at the experience I had today. LegalShield certainly needs other attorney options for NC!

What a scam! I've contacted this firm in explanation of my deceased Mothers Will, drawn up by Merritt, Webb, Wilson, & Caruso. and, I was told I have to purchase a membership for them to explain the Will (If they want a few dollars to explain, what should have already been paid for in the undertaking of producing such a legal document, fine) But for them to tell me I have to purchase a membership before they will explain what it is they put in the Will, regardless of the fact that I am listed as a Beneficiary, how Pathetic... It seems to me when you charge outrages fees to draw up said documents, you should have a duty to, at the very least, explain the terms of the Will without forcing someone to buying a membership... Now I have to spend my time, efforts, and hard-earned money (a novelty to most Lawyers), to drag them into court, via another Attorney and a Motion, for them to divulge information, they should already be legally binding. *As to you response, I was told I must purchase a membership to speak to someone. I may not be a lawyer but buying a membership (to what I don't know), is hardly comparable to paying a consultation fee. Never was a fee discussed or brought up, which I would have been more than happy to have done. The Only information I was told was that I had to become a member, through some membership... Paying a fee for consultation of my Mothers Will, is one thing, buying a membership implies a lot more. Just so were clear on where the matter truly lies. I didn't come up with this "Membership" demand. That was what I was told, specifically, by your staff, who then said, they had to transfer me to someone else to speak about buying a "membership" because they didn't know what that entailed.

Oh My God. As an associate I have a new member and this is the lawfirm assigned. I am very concerned about the reviews I see here! Not Good! I advocate for all my members and I hope! there will be no issues when my new member contacts you for their concerns. I wonder now if the home office knows about this? (Thank you for your feedback) Today I followed up, called the lawfirm and so far there is no great issue. I was able to connect our new member with the firm in a timely manner and hopefully, there will be no issues in the future. So as of now I am changing my post for this firm.

100% recommendation for Lauri Klein. She was patient, thoughtful, thorough, and guided me to a successful personal injury settlement. If you want someone you can trust in a complicated and stressful process, I strongly suggest that you contact Lauri. Tell her about your situation. She will be direct and honest, won't try to rush you, will listen carefully, offer a clear path, and then empower you to rationally choose the best approach for you. 5 stars. 0 regrets.

Lauri Klein is, by far, the best attorney I have ever worked with. Lauri is smart and hard-working-a consummate professional. Calls and messages were always answered within the same day. I was kept informed and always consulted. Lauri treated me with incredible kindness and patience. I felt more like a part of her family than a client. After I had been struck by a car, dealing with the medical providers and insurance companies seemed daunting but Lauri guided me through the process every step of the way. It is not often in this world that you find the total package-someone who is both caring and extremely effective but that is what I have found in Lauri. And in the end my settlement was far larger than I had anticipated. I highly recommend Lauri Klein. I will use Lauri again and have recommended her to friends and family. Thank you, Lauri!

"I hired John as outside and general counsel for a nationwide company I founded and managed, successfully defending the interests in lawsuits, a federal matter, intellectual property rights, drafting/enforcing contracts, insuring regulatory compliance, legal litigation, strategic advice and all other legal needs. I unequivocally highly recommend John as a masterful trial and transitional lawyer as well as an excellent counselor and legal adviser.

Well, I can’t say that I was ever in the courtroom with John… because he kept us out of the court house. His thorough work on contracts, imaginative problem-solving abilities in bringing a deal to closure, his sage advice as to how to approach business challenges all represented talent and skill that are critical in making successful, profitable transactions happen. Always working with the highest level of integrity, he is also a person you just enjoy being around.

I reached out to Eboni for assistance with communicating with the courts about fines and fees I received over 10 years ago. I now live out of state, so it would cost a ton of money to fly back and forth from Ohio to NC to remedy my situation and it is affecting my privileges to drive, she got back to me promptly with detailed information on what I needed to do to handle the situation. I had multiple driving infractions in two different counties and she was able to get most of the charges against me dropped. She communicated with me very effectively and made sure I understood what to do. She is affordable and saved me a lot of time. 10/10, definitely recommend.

I recently had the pleasure of working with Ms. Elm regarding a speeding ticket, and I couldn’t be more satisfied with her representation. From our first consultation, she was professional, knowledgeable, and genuinely invested in my case. Ms. Elm took the time to explain the legal process clearly and answered all my questions. Thanks to her efforts, my charges were significantly reduced, saving me both money and points on my license. I highly recommend Ms. Elm to anyone facing traffic violations—her dedication and professionalism make all the difference.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Durham, North Carolina?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
