This attorney was good for one thing, running up bill. He would never return calls, messages or emails. Provided some of the worse advise. Misquoted many states laws which he claim I needed to follow concerning what I need to pay. Disrespectful and dishonest.

I hired Mr. Cooke for a Separation/Divorce. We consulted in person one time. Perhaps talked again once or twice over the course of 3 years before Divorce final. I was transferred out of state, and called his cell/emailed him dozens of times during separation issues without a call-back or response. His one staff person acted in his stead most of the time, and I was billed as if I was talking with him. The worst part was he insisted I was required by law to pay a portion of my civilian fed pension (Not military) to her, for life, which equaled 25% of my monthly payment. He ghosted me and my ex after telling me we had a court date in Fayetteville (I was living out of state). He was a no-show, and didn't even give me an explanation or apology. I found out after I signed the papers, that the federal law he cited on permanent alimony applies to military spouses with military pensions- not my case. So this is a matter I am fighting to rectify legally. What a mess.

Mr. Cooke and his staff were amazing in helping me with my child custody case. They were able to help me get through a challenging time. They were consistent in making sure my ex was held accountable for nonpayment, and violations of court orders. They also were very honest with me and what were rational expectations for my case. Mr. Cooke works very well with the other attorneys and was always able to work things out for me and my children. The staff were always well prepared, returned my phone calls, and processed paperwork in a timely manner. If you’re looking for a firm with integrity and honesty, this is the place you should go to.

Mr Cooke represented me in my divorce. He did nothing for me! Whatever my ex-wife lawyer wanted she got with no argument. My ex requested $1600 a month for child support for 3 months and she was awarded it even though I am a disabled veteran with a award for the VA of only $3200 a month. My ex wife ran up a bill for $83000 and I was ordered to pay it. I had to give my ex wife my house that I had years before I married her and was ordered to continue making monthly payments until it was paid off. I have been fighting the child support order for years without Mr Cooke's help. The court had stated I was require to pay child support till my 18 year old daughter had graduated high school. First, my ex wife home schooled my 3 children, not one of them ever received a high school diploma, secondly and most important, when my daughter turned 18 on 25 April she got married 2 days later. Regardless, I was still ordered to pay $1600 per month for April, May and June even though she wa married by the magistrate in Fayetteville on 28 April. So please beware, Mr Cooke will not stand up for you even if you have presented the facts to him. He buries his head in the sand. When you call, he never gets back with you. Please I implore you, find a lawyer who will go the extra mile, doesn't make back alley deals that are not in your best interest and you know nothing about anything until the judge reads the judgement order in the courtroom as your are standing there in total shock and bewildered about what just happened. Don't be surprised if within hours of the judgement that you receive a letter stating he's no longer your attorney of record. In better words "F" you, you're on your own. PS: If you really want a good lawyer, you should hire my ex-wife's lawyer, he is far better than Mr Cooke! At least he'll make sure he has your best interest at heart!!!

I made the terrible mistake of hiring this so-called "lawyer" at the costs of $10.000 (ten-thousand) dollars. He did absolutely nothing on my case but accepted and coerced me to accept this lop-sided, totally unfair so-called "plea deal". As a direct result of this "lawyer's" gross incompetence and negligence, I am now on probation for the next two years, forced to submit to random drug testing when I was not arrested nor charged for drugs and drugs played no part whatsoever in the incident that I was arrested for, have had my Driver's License revoked for the duration of this probation, forced to pay restitution and court costs, have to attend a mandatory Anger Management course, and had to spend two days in jail. To anyone reading this review, my advice is to NEVER retain this GREEDY, IMPOTENT, WEAK, INCOMPETENT, INEPT shyster. He will not fight for his client and will hang you out to dry.

I’ve worked with attorney Sternlicht since 2015, and he has made my accident ordeal easier. I did not have to worry about treatments, because I was told how to deal with the accident process, I felt confident, that everything was going to be taken care of. His paralegal Mary, also helped with last minute questions. Thank You both for helping me, and I would recommend Attorney Sternlicht to anyone looking for an accident attorney.

Mr. Sternlicht and legal assistant, Connie Smith, were amazing at representing me in a bodily injury settlement from auto accident. They alleviated the stress of collection calls and letters from medical agencies by contacting them individually. They periodically kept me up to date on the process and made sure I clearly understood the process. They were prompt in returning my calls and answering any questions I had. I was completely satisfied with their professionalism and the outcome I would highly recommend Beaver|Courie Attorneys At Law!

Lee represented me for a family case that spanned multiple years and he remained professional and understanding the entire time. Not being dramatic, he knows his case law and even broke out a law book to show word for word what it says when doubted during a hearing. I even had someone in court ask me for his contact information when they saw how professional and intelligent he handled himself. Lee is honest and will tell you the best advice, even when you might not want to hear it and when you let him know you are uncomfortable with something, he honors your wishes as well. Lee always follows up and if he is unavailable his paralegal does right away. When all was said and done, I feel I received great representation.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Fayetteville, North Carolina?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
