Overall experience honestly, when they took my case. It was fast. The firm was speaking to me and everything was good. And then one day ,it went down hill. I never spoke to the lawyer at all until court. I felt as they kept me in limbo half the time. I would leave message but never got calls back, just email half the time back. I didn't not get no compensation with law firm. I went homeless trying to get help from this firm.

I ignorantly assumed that a speeding ticket was not a big deal but after discovering the true financial damage it would inflict I called Mr. Broadfoot at Beaver Courie Attorneys at Law and he was able get my ticket completely dismissed. Small immediate investment for a long-term payoff.

Mr. Byrd is an excellent attorney. I was seeking legal counsel regarding having a felony conviction expunged off my record. I called several attorneys in the Cumberland County area, and Mr. Byrd was the only attorney who knew the North Carolina expungement laws had changed, what the new statue stated. He went above and beyond to assist me. Mr. Byrd took his time to explain the expungement process, he prepared the proper documentation, obtained the right forms, and did everything correct the first time. I really appreciate his level of professionalism, and attention to detail. Also, Mr. Byrd has great communication skills, and will always follow up with you to answer any additional questions you may have. Mr. Byrd has a great team working with him, and his office staff did a phenomenal job providing updates regarding the case. I must be honest, when I first pursued having my record expunged, I got discouraged. Every attorney I called stated they couldn’t help me. But I didn’t quit. I kept calling and speaking to different attorneys. Mr. Byrd was the last attorney I called, and he was the only one who knew the expungement statue had changed. He immediately helped me, set the right expectations, which resulted in having a felony conviction expunged off my record- forever. I feel like I have a brand-new life, and no longer have to pay for the mistakes of my past. The person I used to be is long and gone, and the new person I am, can look forward to a successful, and blessed future. I’ve forgiven myself for the mistakes of my past years ago, and now, with Mr. Byrd’s help, and Christ’s grace, I can move forward on my journey in life, knowing that I never have to explain the mistakes of my past ever again. I highly recommend Mr. Byrd to assist you with any legal matter you may have. He’s the right attorney to get the job done.

I couldn’t have asked for a better, more professional experience; from beginning to end. Mr Byrd and his staff (Angela) were perfect! After dealing with another law office who gave me the run around for almost a  month after paying in full, Mr. Byrd stepped in and got a citation and FTA I had taken care of with the best outcome possible in less than 48 hours. The process was basically effortless and their response time to every inquiry was almost immediate, even after my case was completed and I still needed a bit of help.  I highly recommend. My driving privileges have been restored and I am forever grateful.

I had a few issues with payment towards the beginning of my charges but Mr. Byrd was extremely patient and understanding! He got me out of 4 serious racing charges that probably would of resulted in me losing my drivers license. It did take about a year and a half but it was honestly 100% worth it. Even Angela is wonderful it’s rare to have such good customer service ! Thank you again MR Byrd

I am a fellow attorney practicing in Cumberland County, NC since 1992. I have known Mike now for 24 years. I hired Mike to handle my traffic matters and civil case. This guy gets it done and is one of the best attorneys I ever worked with here and internationally. I trust this guy with my life and my family's life and I just don't say that about anyone. When everything is on the line, this is the guy you want for your criminal law matters. On a scale from 1 to 10, Mike's a 1000!!!!

Hiring the right lawyer is crucial for the success of your case. Here are some important questions to ask during your initial consultation:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. Who will be handling my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Fayetteville, North Carolina?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
