Pros
1
Excellent legal services and professional representation
“Absolutely stellar law group. I was in a bad situation facing a very serious offense. They prepared me for the worst. Thanks to the incredible research and cross examination at the hearing by Attorney Rainsford, he was able to prove that the encounter with law enforcement was unjustified and I was able to avoid having this on my record.”
2
Caring, responsive, and knowledgeable attorneys
“Unbelievably professional, compassionate, responsive, intelligent, well-read, strategic and principled. I have been working with Jason Murphy since the end of October. Never in my life have I encountered someone in the legal profession with such aptitude, a sense of responsibility and a duty to help his clients, as well as their families.”
3
Reasonable rates and great value for services
“Excellent legal services. Very friendly and helpful staff. Great rates.”
4
Highly recommended by satisfied clients
“Sam is dependable, thoughtful, goes the extra mile and came highly recommend to us by his peers.”
5
Dedicated team that treats clients like family
“This firm was everything I could have hoped to find. The staff was helpful, friendly, responsive to questions and communications, and knowledgeable about the relevant legal issues.”
Cons
1
Lack of communication and follow-through
“If you are looking for an attorney you can trust or for an attorney that will pay close attention to your case then look elsewhere. Communication is largely through email, and if you miss any portion of email instructions it will come back to haunt you both financially and legally. Do not expect them to follow up with you about it as well.”
2
Attorneys can be unprofessional and dismissive
“Egotistic attorneys, who will openly cuss and drop the F bomb and belittle you over phone calls if you question their actions.”

Attorney Cyrus Griswold's behavior in the courtroom is disgusting. He represented my neighbor who's been harrassing me, but tried to turn me into the bad guy. He actually showed me a copy of my property deed, like that made any difference to the case. He's condescending and mean. He grasps at straws trying to throw you off course. He's a hateful man who's obviously acting tough to make up for his lack of skill. Stay far away. Unprofessionalism and incompetence at its finest.

Ms. Kalfas is a very friendly professional person. She takes your case serious and makes sure that she does everything she can possibly do for you. Ms. Kalfas is one of the few attorney's that is knowledgeable about the law and makes sure you understand it. Regardless what the out come will be, I feel that I can sleep at night knowing things are in good hands. I thank her for her honesty and her advise as a professional lawyer.

I used the Coleman law firm, James Rainsford, as my attorney for a negligence case in 2014. He was very informative throughout the process and extremely patient with me as I was a lawyer's nightmare as a client. The firm as a whole has a wonderful team; I highly recommend Coleman, Gledhill, Hargrave, Merritt & Rainsford law firm for competent and thorough representation in any legal issue you might have. This firm is result driven and they stand by their commitment which was demonstrated through their actions in my case. The outcome was outstanding. Thank you, James Rainsford and Coleman, Gledhill, Hargrave, Merritt & Rainsford law firm.

I had the pleasure of hiring James on two occasions and both times he exceeded my expectations. He worked well with all the attorneys involved in the first case and he was a key figure in getting me a great settlement in a personal injury case. His expertise with insurance companies was a key factor. The second case was a very simple case involving a citation but he was very thorough and was able to resolve the issue to my satisfaction. I truly believe he has a great future ahead of him. He is very personable, intelligent and hard working.

I hired James Rainsford when he was referred to me by one of Greensboro's top attorneys. I was scared and felt defeated already. My case seemed doomed. Once I began to work with Mr. Rainsford, he strategically untangled all the parts and pieces little by little. He knew that timing was everything. While he was realistic about a possible adverse outcome, he encouraged me to be patient and positive. He built a strong arguement that was game -changing despite what my case looked like at first glance. My charge was dismissed and my life was put back together. It's better than ever, actually. I highly recommend and trust Mr. Rainsford and his team... 100% Hands Down would hire him agaiin!

I contacted Garen two days before my court date. One week later he was able to appear in court for me and get my penalties reduced. He followed up with a phone to let me know the matter was resolved. Then he followed up with a detailed email of what he did and explained next steps. Absolutely wonderful experience. Garen is a true professional. Thank you Garen

I contacted Mr McClure about a speeding ticket. I was unsure what he could do for me as I was going 17 miles over the limit. He was confident he could help me and he did by getting my ticket reduced to an improper equipment charge. Greatly reduced my court fee and also no insurance points and he charged a very low fee. Thank you so much Mr McClure for your help.

Garen is a magician. I highly recommend his services if you need representation. He is professional, effective, and reasonably priced! I moved out of state right after I received my second speeding ticket in NC. Garen appeared on my behalf and successfully obtained a reduced charge, with no points, despite this being my second 20+ over speeding ticket!!!

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Hillsborough, North Carolina?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
