Do not use Jason unless you want someone that glosses over all aspects of your custody case and just cookie-cutters his way through it. He will put you in a situation that he is not capable of handling and will view your children as paychecks. Will charge you for every breath you take and will be completely unprepared for court. Maybe this was just me, however, my experience was a complete disaster.

I hired Jason Murphy to represent me in simultaneous civil and criminal cases. A consummate professional, always well prepared, he obtained favorable verdicts in both cases. Jason puts his clients best interest first and foremost .

I met Jason when I was seeking representation for my divorce. From the moment we met I felt at ease and that my interests were priority. Jason was compassionate, caring, and most importantly thoughtful in helping me understand the process and what would be best for everyone involved. Divorce is a difficult journey and there are many people involved and emotions run high; Jason was able to be the logical foundation and help me to seek out the most positive outcome for me and my children. And at not time did he forget that the people on the opposing side were human too. He is a genuinely caring individual who wants to do what is right for his client. He helped me through a very difficult case and I could not be more happy with the outcome. I highly recommend Jason to anyone seeking help.

I hired Jason to represent me in an ongoing dispute for alimony and equitable distribution. He took my case on and quickly got up to speed on this long and difficult dispute that had already been going on for more than two years. He methodically worked with the court to push my case towards a resolution. His thorough research on the laws affecting my case finally brought this arduous experience to an end with the best possible outcome I could expect! He is honest and pleasure to work with. I would certainly recommend him for any friends that are going through a divorce or other legal issues.

I used the Coleman law firm, James Rainsford, as my attorney for a negligence case in 2014. He was very informative throughout the process and extremely patient with me as I was a lawyer's nightmare as a client. The firm as a whole has a wonderful team; I highly recommend Coleman, Gledhill, Hargrave, Merritt & Rainsford law firm for competent and thorough representation in any legal issue you might have. This firm is result driven and they stand by their commitment which was demonstrated through their actions in my case. The outcome was outstanding. Thank you, James Rainsford and Coleman, Gledhill, Hargrave, Merritt & Rainsford law firm.

I had the pleasure of hiring James on two occasions and both times he exceeded my expectations. He worked well with all the attorneys involved in the first case and he was a key figure in getting me a great settlement in a personal injury case. His expertise with insurance companies was a key factor. The second case was a very simple case involving a citation but he was very thorough and was able to resolve the issue to my satisfaction. I truly believe he has a great future ahead of him. He is very personable, intelligent and hard working.

I hired James Rainsford when he was referred to me by one of Greensboro's top attorneys. I was scared and felt defeated already. My case seemed doomed. Once I began to work with Mr. Rainsford, he strategically untangled all the parts and pieces little by little. He knew that timing was everything. While he was realistic about a possible adverse outcome, he encouraged me to be patient and positive. He built a strong arguement that was game -changing despite what my case looked like at first glance. My charge was dismissed and my life was put back together. It's better than ever, actually. I highly recommend and trust Mr. Rainsford and his team... 100% Hands Down would hire him agaiin!

We were surprised and pleased at the time and attention Colin took with our family. We had three generations present, and his personal demeanor inspired trust, confidence and respect from all of us. He is particularly noteworthy for the peaceful way he treated my grandfather, who was anxious just to review the legal documents, and has trouble with memory. Colin moved carefully through the papers, explaining when necessary, and at the end we all felt reassured that we were in excellent legal hands and had the personal attention of our lawyer, who knew what we needed and helped us through a daunting process. I highly recommend this office to anyone, particularly if your family member is concerned, anxious, or elderly.

  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Hillsborough, North Carolina?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
