Daron Satterfield loves his job. I wouldn’t have it for love or money, but here is a man who truly loves his work. Here is my story. I sold some land in 2018 in Durham County. The real estate agents Alex Rivers and David Balon did, by way of deception, caused me to sign an agreement with them while under contract to another agency. They told me that their lawyer, Josh Whitaker, said that I did not receive “adequate compensation”. As a result of this advice, I told the first party that I had not received adequate compensation and signed with Alex Rivers and David Balon of ReMax. Within six days or less, a lis pendens or “suit pending” was filed against the land. That action froze my land and put me into a state of severe depression. I hired Kenneth Haywood, a lawyer from the agency of Howard Stallings From Atkins Angell and Davis in Raleigh. I paid him $7500. We went to mediation, all to no avail as I told Haywood. Nothing else was done except for more billing, up to nearly $13000. I refused to pay any more and he quit!~ Daron took on the job at short notice, sat up all night and found case law and president that allowed my effort to continue. We went to court and he was astounding in his remarks to the jury, and his cross examination of this swine. It took about 90 minutes for the jury to find in my favor. Daron is a man you can trust, and one who believes in service to those in need, and I can tell you from the heart that that was me. Francis J Hale, III

Daron Satterfield is a knowledgeable, smart, caring and professional lawyer to work with. He represented us in a real estate case to recover a hefty sum of due diligence money. He did a fantastic job and won the arbitration for us. Now he is doing the paperwork to recover the funds because the defendants did not pay the award. What a nightmare this has been, but having him as our attorney has made the process much better. I highly recommend Daron Satterfield as an attorney and great person.

I used the Coleman law firm, James Rainsford, as my attorney for a negligence case in 2014. He was very informative throughout the process and extremely patient with me as I was a lawyer's nightmare as a client. The firm as a whole has a wonderful team; I highly recommend Coleman, Gledhill, Hargrave, Merritt & Rainsford law firm for competent and thorough representation in any legal issue you might have. This firm is result driven and they stand by their commitment which was demonstrated through their actions in my case. The outcome was outstanding. Thank you, James Rainsford and Coleman, Gledhill, Hargrave, Merritt & Rainsford law firm.

I had the pleasure of hiring James on two occasions and both times he exceeded my expectations. He worked well with all the attorneys involved in the first case and he was a key figure in getting me a great settlement in a personal injury case. His expertise with insurance companies was a key factor. The second case was a very simple case involving a citation but he was very thorough and was able to resolve the issue to my satisfaction. I truly believe he has a great future ahead of him. He is very personable, intelligent and hard working.

I hired James Rainsford when he was referred to me by one of Greensboro's top attorneys. I was scared and felt defeated already. My case seemed doomed. Once I began to work with Mr. Rainsford, he strategically untangled all the parts and pieces little by little. He knew that timing was everything. While he was realistic about a possible adverse outcome, he encouraged me to be patient and positive. He built a strong arguement that was game -changing despite what my case looked like at first glance. My charge was dismissed and my life was put back together. It's better than ever, actually. I highly recommend and trust Mr. Rainsford and his team... 100% Hands Down would hire him agaiin!

Ethan was an excellent help in the tail end of our immigration case. We had been having a very unsatisfactory experience with a previous lawyer for over 2 years, and with just a few short consultations (one related to paperwork clarification, another related to the immigration interview), we were able to complete the process quickly and with confidence, and just one month later, my wife's residency Visa was approved! We only wish we had come to him much sooner, we probably could have saved an extra year in the process. Thank you, Ethan!!

To begin, Ethan was very responsive once we contacted him. He started by understanding what our needs were and our unique circumstances. Then he explained how the process worked and gave advice on the best approach to achieve the result we needed. He assisted with all the fillings and kept us informed throughout. The process wouldn't have gone as smooth without his involvement. We will definitely recommend him to others.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Hillsborough, North Carolina?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
