Pros
1
Excellent customer service and communication
“The staff was very friendly and knowledgeable. When I emailed Jennifer, she would usually respond within a day or two.”
2
Affordable and transparent pricing
“Her services are priced very reasonably, I was only charged once for her services even though she appeared in court several times for me.”
3
Successful case outcomes
“Jennifer got my ticket reduced, and I would recommend her for any Traffic issues.”
4
Convenient and hassle-free process
“I was able to do the entire thing online, from completing the intake form, to submitting payment, to getting the update after my court date.”
5
Experienced and knowledgeable attorneys
“As an attorney myself in a different area of law, I highly recommend Attorney Allen for the services she provides!”
Cons
1
Inconsistent communication and responsiveness
“I had a good experience working with Jennifer Allen's office for a speeding ticket. Got my case dismissed, saving me money and points on my record! I'd hire her again in a heartbeat.”
2
Potential issues with billing and handling of funds
“I paid this 2 months before my court date. Jennifer represents me in court, gets the fine lowered and then tells me I need to pay court costs. I'm not sure what Jennifer Allen law does with the money I paid her.”
3
Concerns about attorney performance and preparation
“Had him for a lawyer didn't really seem like he prepared. Witness in my case ended up doing research during recess in court, lost the case paid thousands..”
4
Lack of transparency and accountability
“I was very disappointed that Ms. Allen was unable to get the citation dismissed. She did not seem to use the fact that the ticket was inaccurate as it referred to a "motor vehicle" instead of simply a vehicle (that is, a bike) even though we brought that to her attention.”
5
Unprofessional and unresponsive behavior
“New to North Carolina with two speeding tickets, I was apprehensive about what to expect and concerned about my driving license and insurance. Based upon Attorney Allen's profile, I retained her and hoped for the best and received the best. She was efficient, knowledgeable, professional and answered each of my questions.”

I hired Ms. Dickerson to represent me in court for a traffic citation I received in Durham, NC. Ms. Dickerson was very clear up front on what her representation included and the expected outcome of my court hearing, based on my driving record. Her fee for her service was fair & reasonable. The outcome of my case exceeded my expectations, largely due to Ms. Dickerson's attention to details, as she was able to have my case dismissed due to an error made with the scheduling of my court date. I don't plan to get anymore citations, but if I'm unfortunate enough to find myself in this same situation in Durham, NC, Dickerson Law will be my first call.

I would suggest no stars. Money/Process driven. Will milk you for everything they can. They are very professional and nice-- before they get your money, after that they will get as much money from you as they can and the communication stops intermediately once they have your money. They are not honest!

Ms. Kalfas is a very friendly professional person. She takes your case serious and makes sure that she does everything she can possibly do for you. Ms. Kalfas is one of the few attorney's that is knowledgeable about the law and makes sure you understand it. Regardless what the out come will be, I feel that I can sleep at night knowing things are in good hands. I thank her for her honesty and her advise as a professional lawyer.

I used the Coleman law firm, James Rainsford, as my attorney for a negligence case in 2014. He was very informative throughout the process and extremely patient with me as I was a lawyer's nightmare as a client. The firm as a whole has a wonderful team; I highly recommend Coleman, Gledhill, Hargrave, Merritt & Rainsford law firm for competent and thorough representation in any legal issue you might have. This firm is result driven and they stand by their commitment which was demonstrated through their actions in my case. The outcome was outstanding. Thank you, James Rainsford and Coleman, Gledhill, Hargrave, Merritt & Rainsford law firm.

I had the pleasure of hiring James on two occasions and both times he exceeded my expectations. He worked well with all the attorneys involved in the first case and he was a key figure in getting me a great settlement in a personal injury case. His expertise with insurance companies was a key factor. The second case was a very simple case involving a citation but he was very thorough and was able to resolve the issue to my satisfaction. I truly believe he has a great future ahead of him. He is very personable, intelligent and hard working.

I hired James Rainsford when he was referred to me by one of Greensboro's top attorneys. I was scared and felt defeated already. My case seemed doomed. Once I began to work with Mr. Rainsford, he strategically untangled all the parts and pieces little by little. He knew that timing was everything. While he was realistic about a possible adverse outcome, he encouraged me to be patient and positive. He built a strong arguement that was game -changing despite what my case looked like at first glance. My charge was dismissed and my life was put back together. It's better than ever, actually. I highly recommend and trust Mr. Rainsford and his team... 100% Hands Down would hire him agaiin!

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Hillsborough, North Carolina?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
