I hired Ms. Meyers to handle my divorce because she was referred by one of her sorors. To make a long story short, her “flat fee” was $4,000. She did absolutely nothing while she was my lawyer. She did not file one document or even share one single draft with me. We communicated through a messaging portal and had one phone conversation. Some questions went responded to for extended periods of time. When I started asking too many questions, she dismissed me from her firm. Within the 1st week of hiring my new lawyer, I had several court documents filed and the new firm actually show (email) me a draft of everything they do. I made more progress with my new team in 1 week then I had made with Ms. Meyers over 8 months. I am not sure if she just didn’t have the experience and didn’t know what to or if she was just being lazy but it was an expensive lesson to learn. If you need someone to actually help you especially with family matters, please find someone else. It might suck to spend the additional funds but it will be worth it in the end. Like the old saying goes, “you get what you pay for”.

Mrs. Meyers was great to work with. It is easy to tell that she has a passion for what she does and is focused on the best interest of the parties involved. She really listened to all aspects of my situation and respectfully advised me on how to approach it. Documents were turned into the court in a timely fashion & she was very easy to get in touch with. I would highly recommend her.

Very poor litigator, as another reviewer pointed out. Poor communication throughout two hearings and in need of a better paralegal. The only time it was easy to speak with her was when it was time to make a payment. We wasted close to 3 grand on her, and after losing our second temporary custody order case, we wisely switched lawyers. The other party represented themselves and out-mitigated this lawyer in court on BOTH occasions. Meanwhile, Atty. Meyers read basic questions from a print-out. I don't know if she was afraid of the presiding judge or lacked the skills she needed to successfully argue the case on both occasions. However, she is way too overpriced and seemed to lack the knowledge it took to win. After we switched lawyers, we ended up winning EVERYTHING and everything went in our favor, every single time. Costly mistake in choosing Atty Meyers first though. Lesson learned. I would NEVER refer her to anyone.

We had a child support modification case, in addition to overpaying child support for almost a year, we received a bill from our attorney for almost 5,000.00. The "ala carte" style of charging clearly worked to her advantage, however not the advantage of us, the client. Also, it is clear that Atty Meyers needs a paralegal. She does not submit documents to the court in a timely manner. i.e. After submitting all of the material for the initial motion, it took her over 1 month to draft the document for our approval and almost 15 days after to file. If time is of importance, she is not the best option. Also, we have a discrepancy where a document was either not filed, or filed and lost (I'm still not sure), but it caused our hearing to be delayed even longer. Finally, In terms of litigating, Atty Meyers, literally sat there as the defendant (who represented their self), out litigated her, and ultimately won their case. So we look at this bill and are wondering "What if we had represented ourselves"? One thing is for sure, we would be 5000 dollars richer.

I got a traffic citation when traveling home from vacation. Cotten Law Firm handled my case for me so I didn’t have to travel 6 hours back to NC. Case was reduced to Improper Equipment. Could not have been more pleased! I called multiple times to check on things and was always greeted by a kind and helpful person on the other end of the phone. Highly recommend!

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Raleigh, North Carolina?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
