I got into a bind and was reluctant at first because of prices. I saw Mrs . Lacy H online and after already seeing great reviews I decided to reach out via email to discuss my case. Mrs. Lacy was very understanding and was very willing to negotiate my price as well being that I could have well spent over 1,000 is dollars I ended up paying only roughly 5-7 hundred. After a few emails back and forth she was very straightforward and helpful regarding possible outcomes and reassuring me every step of the way and showing up promptly to my case. I felt very validated. Thanks for helping me get the best outcome for my case .

It has been an honor and privilege to have Sonya Dubree represent me for 2+ years throughout my divorce process. I am deeply grateful for her expertise, compassion, and dedication. Sonya's partnership with Tharrington Smith (THS), alongside Steven Mansbery's representation, allowed them to expertly manage my divorce case, including the complex business and financial aspects involved. Their exceptional efforts led to favorable outcomes, including temporary spousal support, successful contempt motions and orders, attorney’s fees, and alimony. Although delays were unavoidable due to the defendant’s non-compliance and intentional obstruction—even in defiance of court orders—Sonya and Steven navigated these challenges with remarkable skill and professionalism, ultimately securing significant victories on my behalf. I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to Sonya, Steven, Monica, and Carolynn for their outstanding work during my alimony trial. Sonya’s opening statement was deeply compelling, compassionate, and credible, showcasing her commitment to my best interests. She excelled in cross-examinations and demonstrated genuine care and understanding when questioning me. Steven’s dedication, exceptional handling of expert witnesses, and strong expertise in complex financial analysis were invaluable in addressing the business, accounting, and economic aspects of my case, giving me confidence in his advocacy. I also appreciated Carolynn’s support throughout the hearing; her presence made a meaningful difference, strengthening our case. Together, they navigated the defendant’s tactics with finesse and crafted expertly tailored filings. The diligence and commitment of the THS team have not gone unnoticed, and I am sincerely grateful for all they have done for me. I feel truly fortunate to have had their representation. Throughout this process, I developed a strong bond with Sonya, who not only fought tirelessly on my behalf but also kept me grounded, providing both expert legal guidance and compassionate support. She is an exceptional attorney and a wonderful person, and I am deeply thankful for her. Despite the frustrations—particularly with the defendant’s failure to substantiate financial claims and expenses—Sonya and her team offered me something invaluable: hope for the future and a sense of peace as this chapter nears its close.

Absolute Scam and Unprofessional Behavior Jeremy, I hired you to help with a bogus speeding ticket, where I have clear dash cam footage showing my speed, location, and the officer’s actions before and after the stop. The officer claimed I was going 80 in a 45, wrote the wrong location of the stop, and the speed limit on that road was actually 55. My speedometer was at 61, clearly shown on the dash cam. Yet, you had the nerve to tell me you could “maybe” reduce the ticket to a 14-over, despite knowing the entire ticket was a joke. After this ridiculous introduction, I called the very next day—over a month before the court date—and requested a refund. Your desk lady assured me I’d get a full refund. But today, I get a call telling me the case was continued (even though I fired you), and now you’re only offering half of my payment back because you “spent 20 minutes” on my case? That’s a load of crap. Then, to top it off you have the audacity to threaten me with legal action if I dispute this scam through my bank. You’re not even competent enough to handle a simple case like this and now you’re acting like a crook. I honestly feel bad for your firm that you’re so desperate for this money, but I’ll be sure to keep on sharing my experience the community. Keep the half—you clearly need it more than I do. Shameful.

What Questions Should I Ask Before Hiring a Lawyer?

Hiring the right lawyer is crucial for the success of your case. Here are some important questions to ask during your initial consultation:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. Who will be handling my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  4. What is your approach to resolving cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. What potential outcomes can I expect?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the expected timeline for my case?

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Raleigh, North Carolina?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
